I kind of like the headset that came with my iPod, but I wonder if there are better ones out there.
I hear some people describe the standard ones as crappy.
I am looking for two kinds:
I want one I can sleep with, and I am also looking for one for excercize.
The problem I have in either case is that the ones that came with it fall out of my ears pretty easily.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I like the ear buds with the wrap around part that goes above your ear.
The in ear ones stand up pretty well to running as well.
Sadly its impossible to test em cause of the packaging.

Wow, booster, those look cool but they are way out of my spending limit. The skullcandy seem more reasonable. But I don't know of they have any better fidelity than the high end earbuds. I'd like to get two sets, one for sleeping in and one for running, so they both need to stay in. But the other thing that I do not like is anything that wraps around the ear. That drives me crazy. Is the rubber material (silicone?) that's on the canal end enough to hold it in during sweating or sleep?

Many of the in the canal phones are silicone, similar to high end ear plugs and are meant to stay in.
Try these. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106229)

I personally like the headsets that wrap around the back of your head. Never have they fallen off during a workout. They only get pushed up when laying back on a bench doing some bench presses. I've been using that type of headset for 4-5 years at the gym.
I have tried all kinds.

Go with Skullcandy they have a lifetime guarantee on their products and they have cheaper ear buds I think I paid only 30 bucks for the ones I have. The guarantee rules if something breaks all you do is cut the ear buds off and mail them back to them and they send you a new pair.

For beaters, I'm a big fan of Sony buds. I've owned MDR-EX 81s (Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-EX81LP-Bud-Style-Stereo-Earphones/dp/B0007N55LO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247110055&sr=1-1) for a few years and they last a long time and offer a lot better audio quality than the stock Apple buds. They stay in my ears at the gym and I've fallen asleep with them in my ears (planes) and they didn't fall out.
I found a temporary deal at Shnoop about a month ago selling two sets of very similar Sonys for $12 + shipping. (Legit, not knockoffs.)
If you don't like the loops, check out MDR-EX 71s.

Firstly, as a rule, quality headphones are never packaged with a device, but are sold alone. Anyone who has never used anything besides what came with their iPod or player has no idea what they're missing.

I'm a fan of some Sony's, but not those. I've bought and returned them due to tinniness and poor bass response.
Those were one of several experiments of mine with canal phones, and unfortunately I am one of those poor souls who cannot tolerate them inserted so deeply (!) in the ear canal. They make me squirm. I do love a good pair of studio monitor headphones with full cups, but they just don't last on the go with the bumps and jostling they get from being carried in a backpack. I see guys do it, but they look as if their whole purpose in life is to listen 24/7. Not practical for those employed elsewhere than a record shop. The lower end ones are so-so, and decent foldables really are no longer made. Behind the neck phones allow hats, but there's not any decent or "high-end" models I've seen since Aiwa, and I really don't find them comfortable either.
For me, the best balance of quality and lightness/portability has been the forward facing, yet partially in-ear, style of Sony. There are the classic headband versions, but several of the over the ear clip versions too. Most are cheap, and sound as much, but the MDR-J20 (NOT the MDR-AS20) has the best overall quality and bass response of this style. They remain low-end in status, but short of full cups and canal-insertion styles, this has been the best I could find/tolerate. (They come in white, black, black/silver and blue/silver)

I agree that they are not the best things going (today) but for pretty short money they are a heck of a lot better than the buds that ship with iPods.
I really like my Shure E3Cs, but try to limit their use to non gym/yardwork type activities (during those I break out the Sonys. :) )

I got these (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-EX51LP-Fontopia-Headphones-White/dp/B000779RZU/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1247233449&sr=1-12) ones with my Walkman MP3 player. Got the same ones for my wife for Christmas. I think that they are very comfortable. I have also fallen asleep with them in my ears.
