View Full Version : Giving your seat to a pregnant woman

For the longest time I've noticed that fewer and fewer men will give up their seats on the subway or PATH trains to pregnant women. If anything, more women do. It's so pathetic to see a REALLY pregnant woman stand in front of a guy who's just ignoring her. What's the deal with that?

I've noticed that as well Alice. I've seen women give up their seats for pregnant women, small children, and senior citizens but I have yet to see a man do so. In fact on more than one occasion I have seen men push their way to a seat not caring who they were pushing out of the way to get it. It's very rude.

how do you know they're pregnant, maybe they're just really fat and should stand for a couple of seconds.

Alice-

Chivalry is not dead (even in Jersey Erin). I've given up my seat to a pregnant woman before. I don't ride PATH, but when I'm on the subway I have. I will hold the door for whoever is behind me (I usually have to open it as the person in front of me won't hold the door) but believe me, there are some people who are still a little old fashioned when it comes to stuff like that.

I have done it before and will again, Alice. There are still some polite people around.

It happens in NYC too Erin, don't single out JOY-SEY, huh!

I offer my seat to any woman...pregnant or not. I also hold doors open for them.

I'm so old fashioned, I still think women should be treated special. Imagine that!

In some countries, it seems like it's an understood law that you give up your seat to anyone older than you. Last Spring, a teenager on a bus in the Czech Republic got out of his seat for me. I'm only 30.

I don't get up for pregnant women because I think it's in their best interest to get used to pain and discomfort. My actions are purely altruistic.

i give my seat up to old ladies and pregnant women. But if she's just fat, screw it. it'll do her some good to stand.

ugh, I won't even sit on a path/subway unless it's virtually empty, mostly because I don't want some pregnant woman sitting next to me...:-)

I know that I help pregnant women get a seat or help them out...but is not just for pregnant women but all women in general. I will get up froma seat to give it to a woman. Hey call me a sucker, but that is the way that I was raised...Chivalry is far from dead, but the negative does outweigh the positive I suppose

Courtesy, or lack thereof, is a learned behavior. If a child does not have curteous parents, chances are that he'll not be curteous himself.

The problem is compounded by parents who think their child can do no wrong, and that he or she is more important than anyone else.

I will give up my seat to the
elderly and women who are
pregnant I will not give up my
seat just because you are
female. I don;t know why I
should give up a seat for a
female even if she is
hot...... Also.....I never
sit in the seats that say you
should give it up to the
elderly because I feel bad
showing an old person that
they are o
