This story kinda skeeved me out so I will protect the name of my friend. Let's just call him Bill. Oh shit, that is his name. Well, tough shit.
An old friend I made earning my stripes in the NJ Underground scene called me up and complained about how shitty his comp was working. So I've been offering him to give him a clean install of Windows if he A. Backed up his own shit and B. Bought some RAM because he was running XP on 256MB and that's dogshit.
So he finally got around to backing his shit up and buying the RAM. I just went up there a couple of hours ago and grabbed the tower. I get it home and start blowing canned air into it and HOLY HELL IS THAT FUCKING THING ALIVE??!??!?!??

This is, without a doubt, the LARGEST hairball I've ever pulled from a computer. And that was after about 10 minutes of dust blowing ANYWAY. It was all trapped behind a space on the front of a Dell case if anyone is familiar with the dead zone behind the power button area.
I'm starting to think half his problem might have been shitty performance due to overheating. The computer is sitting next to mine right now formatting. Gonna get all his Dell drivers, drop some programs on there and get it back to him in a few days.

Saturday, I opened mine up to see how dusty it was in there.
It was pretty bad.
I vaccuum mine out with a crevice tool on my vaccuum claener.
Works better than just blowing it around...

Dude, make sure you ground yourself properly. Sticking a power tool into a computer case can really fuck it up if you're not careful. Even plastic tools can carry a small electrical charge and that might be all you need to short something.
Just exercise some caution.

i cleaned out a pc that had been on 24x7 for about 6 years without any service, and it was absolutely filthy, though nothing as well-formed as the hairball Moe found. how do people allow stuff like that to happen to their pc's?? wouldn't the buzz from the years of filth built up on the fan and the layers of dust on the air intakes make you think the pc needs to be cleaned?!?
p.s. i thought the tribble references were fairly obvious.

Had a comp infested with ants once.
And people who spill stuff on their comps and never feel the need to clean it off disgust me.

years ago, i worked a helpdesk position and got a call from a user saying her keyboard wasn't working. i brought a new keyboard to her desk, and when i picked up the broken keyboard, coffee started spilling out of it. she acted innocent and actually looked up to the ceiling, as if to indicate there must be coffee leaking from the floor above her.

I guess Computer People are just like Car People. Some folks don't consider what's going on inside that computer tower for years and years just as some people don't consider upkeep on a car.
It does baffle me though because now I look at EVERYTHING I own and try to upkeep it. Everything that runs can break down. Anything with moving parts will eventually fail. Gotta keep on top of that shit.

That's a pretty good one, living things in a working computer trump my find.

I gave my band mate my old comp a few years ago and stupidly forgot to clean inside. Well a few months later it was giving her sudden shut downs. Heatsink over the processor was CAKED with dust. I felt bad because it was my fault, luckily it did no damage and her mother still uses that 7 or 8 year old computer to this day.

Is that you in the pics Moe?
That is by far one amazing hairball and you need to make certain the processor is still pumping out cycles after that. Processors can slowly die instead of an all the sudden death, hampering performance.
The worst I pulled out of a case was carpet fibers bound up between the cpu cooler and the channel that fed it to the rear fan in a laptop. Unfortunately due to heat build up their computer was one core short of a dual core.
I also have screen (like you'd buy for your windows) covering every opening to my computer. The inside of my case looks spic and span.

Yea that's me outside my house with the fuzzball in hand.
After a small problem and installing the RIGHT copy of XP I'm posting from the guy's computer right now. Everything seems to be running OK. His computer recognized all his RAM and I got all his devices working.
So chalk up another clean Windows wipe success story for Moe.

Im gonna buy one of those like 1 or 2 gallon compressors. I can really use one with all the computer work I end up doing. It'll pay for itself by NOT buying canned air in a few upgrades. and maintenance runs.

It's probably not TOO much of a risk but keep in mind that compressors can spray small amounts of oil. I had that concern when I wanted to use one to clean 35MM negatives. I was told I'd need a filter for it. It should probably be OK for a computer, but keep it in mind just in case.

Shit, I forgot about that. Thanks.
And I know a specialized one for electronics will cost way too much.
Eh, fuck it then. I'll stick to canned air.

I'm not sure what a filter would cost, but if it's not too much, it could be used on a cheap one.

Yea, I'll check for a cheap one and then Google for some forums or something. I'm sure someone else had the idea maybe they also came up with a cheap, safe solution.

I use mine in conjunction with a shop vac without problem. The oil thing is only with tools that use oil, the compressor does not leak oil into the supply tank. I set mine at 40 psi, it kicks up the dust, and the shop vac sucks up the dust so it does not resettle. The trick is not getting too close to the components, hold the spray nozzle 6-8" away and it does a fine job. Compressors also have a drain incase they suck up humidity, just drain the tank after each use.
Oof. I once found a thick and yellow toenail clipping inside a tower here at the office. I dry heaved for a good 10 minuites..

Just the increased dander and hair in the air can really fuck things up. But if you remove the cover and blow it clean every month or so you're probably gonna be fine. Just make sure you get to the fins of your heatsink over your processor, if it's not exposed remove any ducting that covers it, clean it and replace the duct.

Yeah we got some characters around here. It's a different world down here, like Mos Eisley. I've seen some odd stuff over the years.
