My wife's 5th Gen Ipod Video won't hold a decent charge anymore. I've looked around online, and based on demonstration videos (http://www.ipodhowtovideo.com/video/videobattreplacement.html), it seems like replacing the battery is a pretty easy process to do myself. Has anyone had any experience with this? Any recommended vendors for buying a replacement battery?

I've opened my ipod plenty of times, I used an old credit card to slide it open.
Newer technology has the best batteries I think, they've been around for ages.

it will involve a blow dryer, a jeweler's philips head screw driver, and a jeweler's flathead screw driver.
it's actually pretty easy to do.
got to dealextreme.com/ (http://www.dealextreme.com/), i'm pretty sure you'll find what you need there.
i've dealt with them before, they're in hong kong so it may take some time to get to you if you order from them.

Some places sell tools specifically for opening up the iPod cases - you can save a few bucks and just use a couple of medium/heavy guitar picks (better than screwdrivers, as they don't mar the housing.) It's a pretty straighforward install, you just have to be careful not to stress or foul up the ribbon cables inside.

Wow, Jesus. That's fucking dirt simple. I remember an old co-worker of mine had an older gen Nano. He bought a replacement battery and when he got it he realized he'd have to do some micro soldering. But looks like the newer shit is all connectors.
I love it! At least I know that I can replace my own iPod Video battery now. That means I'll probably have that thing until the hard drive dies. And if replacing those is cheap and easy I may have the thing a lot longer.

OK, the hard drive is over $200 from the same guys Mikeyboy used, so fuck that. I'll replace anything on my iPod until the HD dies, then get a new one.

If yours shits the bed, before running out to buy a replacement you may want to give Apple a call. My 5G (Video) died this week - it's gotta be 3+ years old.
For kicks I decided to call Apple to see what they could do. I described the issue (no more sound other than static) - the woman did some poking around and said that they'd be able to send me a refurb as the issue was related to a known manufacturing issue. That nice confederate lady saved me $250. YMMV of course :)

Wow really? OK then, I'll give them a call and at least try it if and when my iPod shits the bed.
