View Full Version : 2009 MLB All-Star Game

So, the rosters were announced earlier today. A couple of interesting debates...

Does it make sense that Josh Hamilton is the AL's starting center fielder when he's spent a majority of the season on the DL? He's apparently only started 20 games in center.

Should MLB count votes for suspended players? Manny was sitting out a 50-game suspension for PED's, and still came in 7th in outfield voting. Is MLB being two-faced by condemning steroid-use and boasting about their strict policies, yet allowing a suspended player to qualify for All-Star voting?

And of course, the age-old debate: Should this game count?

And no, the Hamilton thing is a joke and only reinforces my thoughts on fan voting. To do this right, players should vote and NOT be allowed to vote for their own teammates. Include managers as well if you like on a weighted scale under the same rules.

Vote Lindy for the AL Final Vote people!

Honestly, he deserves a shot out there being the only player of the group who not only hits for power, but average as well. F Kinsler and his shitty Texas fans voting for the likes of Hamilton just bc of last year. Seriously, does Texas ever do anything good!? Hell, they couldn't even save the Alamo and gave us W!

How the hell did Brian Fuentes make the team? Hes been horrible in LA and why are both teams only taking 2 catchers? Judging from the last couple of years with extra innings and all there should be another catcher on both sides, get rid of Beltran and Hamilton and put the catchers from Colorado and the new blood from Baltimore. Theres not one rookie for either side which is atrocious as well.

Once Bud Selig is gone, I'd love to see the new baseball commissioner show some balls and make some big changes to the MLB All-Star game like:

Don't let fans vote anymore. Baseball fans are homers, and are fuckn stupid! Have a panel of sports writers vote the most deserving players in.

Don't let the game count for anything. IT'S AN EXIBITION GAME! What's done in the regular season should matter more. The team with the most wins gets home field for the world series.

Don't make it mandatory for atleast 1 player from each team to have to make the All-Star rosters. The most deserving players should make it, period. These guys are taking away spots from deserving players.

And how about allowing catchers to re-enter the game in case of injury or extra innings.

And how about allowing catchers to re-enter the game in case of injury or extra innings.

That rule already exists. At least, the injury part does.

And I for one like the 1 player from each team rule. Baseball's rosters are big enough to accomodate it. It gives everybody someone to look forward to from their team, and keeps many deserving players from getting buried just b/c they are on shitty teams. Don't tell me that wouldn't happen.
When I was a kid rooting my way through empty Mets seasons, I definitely looked forward to the Mets rep being in the game, even when it was just Bobby Jones.

all-star games are silly things for the fans to enjoy. they should have whatever players start they want, no matter how crappy they might be.

This argument is bullshit, especially when all-star games are listed as huge resume stuffers for hof votes, gold gloves, contracts and more. Not to mention that certain players get votes SIMPLY by playing in areas with a larger fanbase and new kids playing awesome never get nods. One only needs to look to the NHL all-star game this past year to see just how bad it can be, or at Texas voters with Hamilton. I truly think the all-star game is a celebration of the best players in the league, and it SHOULD NOT be a popularity contest. If you want that to be the case, rename it MLB Idol bc all-star just doesn't fit your fan centric crap game system. That's simply not an all-star game.

As for the mlb writers voting, sometime they can be more biased than the fans. I say players and managers on a weighted scale (manager's votes mean more bc of their numbers and who they are) and you simply can't vote for your own teammates. I think this is something most would take seriously. Keep the fan vote, but just expand it a little to chose an infielder, outfielder and pitcher for each league or so.

Problem solved....outside of going with the best record gets home field advatage rule tweak someone else mentioned.

and fuckin up their swing Yea because 1 day(of which afterwards the player has a few days off) is going to fuck up a players swing. That's a silly misconception. Those same players are hitting for the bleachers before every game in batting practice.

But the homerun derby is pretty boring. So is every other all-star game for each sport, along with their all-star events(dunk and 3pt contest in the NBA, QB and Kicker challenges in the NFL, and whatever hockey does).

certain players you are right. Like Griffey, Pujols, guys like that, its not gonna do shit to their swing. But it really fucked up Wright that one year, cause he had to change his swing for the event. If your swing is natural to hit homers, you are fine

I think the ASG and HRD are events you have to see in person. I went to the Futures Game and Celebrity Softball game today thinking they would be kinda boring, but what the hell I had tickets so I might as well go. Turns out they were both a ton of fun and mostly because of all the random celebrities and former players you see casually walking around on and off the field. Seeing those people just isn't the same when its on tv.

The relationship between the team and McGwire has been pretty frosty since he retired. They basically acknowledge him only when they seemingly feel they have to. I think it was an article in SI I read a year or so ago about how they comissioned a statue to be made of him to put outside the stadium when he retired but then they put that on hold as the steroid stuff took off. The statue is done, but it's just sitting in storage.

I looked up Musial's numbers just for the hell of it and it kinda blows my mind how he's one of the most "ignored" legend out. Most baseball fans have at least heard of him, but if he had been on the Yanks or Red Sox with these numbers he'd be MUCH more revered than he is now:

2nd all-time total bases: 6134
3rd all-time runs created: 2562
3rd all-time extra base hits: 1377
3rd all-time doubles: 725
4th all-time base hits: 3630
6th all-time RBI: 1951
6th all-time games: 3026
9th all-time runs: 1949
9th all-time at bats: 10972
12th all-time walks: 1599

Ridonkulous.
