Just curious as to the best live show any of you have ever seen: personally its a toss up between pink floyd(first concert), U2( amazing live show and "living legends"), and Live(really amazing in a concert setting)

I gotta rip Marc off and say Pearl Jam as well. September 11, 1998 at MSG
Like fivehorizons says:
During 'Alive,' Ed makes four attempts to toss his microphone over the vocal monitor rig above his head, and finally gets it over, but instead of just standing there, he proceeds to CLIMB UP THE MIC CORD and hang there for the rest of the song. Possibly the best show the band has ever played in their life. Period. (And they knew it, too.)

Metallica in 2000 in Phoenix. Still the one and only show I've been to.
Man, I've seen so many it's gonna be hard to pick just one. Clapton, Dire Straits, The Stones, AC/DC, Dylan, Willie Nelson, Allman Brothers (dozens of times), etc. as well as a ton of smaller shows with guys like B.B. King, Steve Forbert, James Cotton and Koko Taylor...
I think the most moving experience I ever had, though, was seeing Lyle Lovett and his Large Band at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

One of the better shows I saw was Widespread Panic in '93. What's notable was the bar I saw them in had terrible acoustics and was shaped like a bowling alley. But on that night, Widespread Panic owned the place, the sound was great, great vibe, people were shoulder to shoulder. Still the best show I've seen since I've moved here.

beasties did an unadvertised show during the hello nasty tour at hammerstein ballroom. it was way more relaxed than the big arena shows. no uniforms, they just wore their regular clothes & put on a great show.
i've seen marilyn manson a few times & he actually puts on a really great show. madonna caliber. it's more about the performance than the actual music.

I am a giant fan and thought they sounded great was Judas Priest, when Halford returned to the band, I think that was the Angel Of Retribution tour.
But to me the best ever was the Foo fighters at MSG for the Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace tour. They sounded great. They performed a great show. Dave Grohl's voice was excellent. He would scream from the first song and I think his voice gave out right at the end of the last encore song. They were just all around great. Performed some new stuff as well as the older stuff. Not just all their big songs.
Also Serj Tankian from System of a Down opened for them. He was pretty good too.
Great show and I think about it often.

DUUUUDE....i was at that show (Continental Arena)
Had a great time...we were right up on the stage, group of white kids standing next to a group of black kids, kinda nervously eyeing each other up and down. We pulled out a spleef and this black dude turns to me and says "you guys aint gonna be doin any of that moshin shit, are ya?" and i was like "you guys aint gonna shoot up the joint, are ya?" Needless to say, we shared the herb and had a great time.
Then when the Clan went off, the stadium looked like it was melting b/c all the people in the seats started rushing the floor.....great fkn time!

once the rush happened, i got seperated from my 2 friends and didnt see them all nite...i had a bag of weed, but no bowl....luckily enough, some kid next to me had a bowl, with no weed. We of course became fast friends.
At the end of the show, my friends are nowhere to be found. I head back to my car, figuring they would meet back there. When i get there, i see them in my car, holding up autographed ticket stubs. Apparanetly, during the rush, the got swept to the side/back of the stage, and started bullshittin with U-God for about 10 minutes before someone noticed that they didnt have passes and *poof* they were sent out the door. They missed the entire Rage set, but had a great story, so it all worked out.

The Dead Milkmen Dave Blood Memorial Shows
They broke up when I was in the fifth grade- I was too young to go to the last show but my brother did. They were the first 'alternative' type band I ever heard, and I grew more and more enamoured with them as the years went on. They seemed to have no interest in reuniting, there wasn't really anyone asking them to play again, and this was before the huge wave of old punk bands getting back together. The bass player killed himself and I really thought 'ok, thats it, now I'll never get to see them.' But they played 2 memorial shows at the Troc.
It was like traveling back in time. The Troc wasn't that full, I was on the younger side of the crowd, there wasn't any kind of scenesters. It was a bunch of mid 20s - mid 30s ugly people watching a really sweet and genuine act of nostalgia. And they were really tight for being such a sloppy band.

System of a Down Secret Show @ Irving Plaza, Sept 7, 2001.
Just them for 2 hours. it was an awesome show. they were promoting the Toxicity album that came out earlier that week. the audiance was smelly, but it was insane. Singing at the top of my lungs to songs i really like in a room full of people doing the same is SO much fun.
Bjork, The Volta Tour @ Radio City, May 2, 2007
my first Bjork show and i was totally impressed. the audience was full of "colorful characters" and it was weird having assigned seats at a concert (im always in genreal admission). i had a GREAT time. I never liked the recordings of her live stuff, but actually being there to see her perform was very moving. she had an awesome laser light show and her dj had a turntable that was all touch screen and light guided. that chick has some serious pipes on her. brava
Honorable mention: Lamb of God @ L'amours
i cant remember the date, but it was when Randy Blythe broke his collar bone after jumping into the crowd during the first song (Black Label). the musicians kept playing even tho Randy wasnt singing and it was a rare time to appreciate the music (they were sending paramedics to check up on him). The previous band (whose name escapes me) valiantly tried to continue the show, but the singer didnt know many of the lyrics. so he ended up pulling the mic near the front row and this one guy knew every song. They pulled him up onstage and he sang the rest of the show. The guy kept talking about he was kinda living his dream like this (he was a singer in a band). he (with the audience) sang his heart out, hitting everything just like in the album. in gratitude, LoG took that kid's band with them on tour.
that was my first lamb of god show.

I'll just cut and paste my reply from this thread: (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=75447)
May 2008, during JazzFest in New Orleans, we attended a chairty concert at Tipitina's, 7pm-2am or so.
Probably the best single show I've ever seen. The lineup was this:
Little Feat, Galactic, The Radiators, The Rebirth Brass Band, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Trombone Shorty, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Wolfman Washington, Donald Harrison, George Porter Jr., Johnny Vidacovich, Eric Lindell, and a few others, plus a slew of brass bands playing outside on the street. A simply mind-bogglingly quality New Orleans funk and blues show.
Also, Billy Joel- NYE, 1989. Soft spot b/c it was my first concert. Plus it was a great 3 hour show, and we did the whole Auld Lang Syne thing at midnight.
Metallica- Woodstock, 1999. Only time seeing them, and it was a great show. Particularly memorable b/c it started to pour rain right before Enter Sandman and a lot of the crowd scrambled. Then right as the song got going, the lightning and thunder kicked in and the rain really came down. Seriously, couldn't have planned better pyro. Then, after the song ended, the lightning ended and the rain slowed to a trickle. Bizarre and awesome.

Since I'm part of the geezer crew I'm going way back for these two.
I think it was 1980 and it was definitely late summer when the Talking Heads played at Wollman Rink in Central Park. It was before Remain in Light was released and the only hint that they were going with the African polyrythyms was I Zimbra. They came out with like 10 additional musicians and just lit up the place. My head was spinning and my Caucasian feet never stopped dancing. It was the only corporate sponsored event I've been to that had a real encore: the house (rink) lights were at full brightness and the Dr. Pepper jingle was playing for at least ten minutes but everyone was staying put and screaming like banshees until the band came out for a few more songs.
The other contender was the Clash at Pier 84 a few years later. Kurtis Blow opened up, which was nice, and the Clash were great but the transcendant part happened about
2/3rds of the way through the show when the clouds opened up and started pouring. The crowd went nuts with a combination wet t-shirt contest/mosh pit bacchanal and the band raised their game to match the insanity. More fun than words can convey.
I guess everyone's favorites are usually early in their adult life before we get jaded and moments of transcendance are still possible.

To keep it moving I'll go with Slipknot in 2006, the tour supporting Vol. 3... pretty awesome shows. Personally it would probably be Hatebreed at Toad's Place in New Haven or Rancid/AFI/Distillers at Valentine's in Albany. Hatebreed is always cool in Toad's because of the local band coming home aspect and I have such good memories of Rancid/AFI from my time working with rancid.net from that show in Albany.

U2 & Pearl Jam in Honolulu December 2006. I feel like I have to say that just becasue I was there, they're iconic bands and the show was amazing. Second has to be a private show I saw Hootie & The Blowfish play in 2004-ish. John Daly is an alum of the University of Arkansas where I'm first of all a fan and second a small time booster. John hosted a golf tourney here for a few years in a row and Hootie played all of them, the first being a private show for the golfers and guest, about 1,000 people in an outdoor setting. The first few songs were unplugged adn they wrapped up with The Dooby Brothers "Without Love". Fuckin A, buddies.

I just remembered this. Grey Area opening for The Bouncing Souls at the Troc in philly. Grey Area had been broken up for awhile, and the singer had just recently come out to say he wasn't going to record anymore, but just wanted to play occasional shows with friends. They played a really great set and got a crowd, many of them who didn't know the band, really into it (including the parents I was sitting next to.)
Everyone is yelling for an encore and the singer, Ernie, is saying 'no no we dont have any more time. no no the drummer only knows the set list...' The Bouncing Souls give the ok for Gray Area to take up some of their set and they pull the drummer for Kid Dynamite out of the crowd. Then they play "Birthdays" which is a song by Ernies original band Token Entry that was covered by Kid Dynamite. Everyone just exploded.

Also a girl with a huge rack and a white tank top on the other side of the balcony kept getting a spotlight shined on her. Everyone you ran into that night said "Did you see that girl with the tits?"
Wow, sounds like a great show. It's a shame Gray Area wasn't around longer, they were TOPS! I saw a similar line-up: Gray Area, Bouncing Souls, Anti-Flag, and 2 Man Advantage. That show could only have been better if Anti-Flag forgot to show up -Justin Sane is a teensy bit too preachy...
But Gray Area, man, they really were on-point. Their sound was something special.

October 14, 2008 - Neil Young at Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN - I am about 98% sure that I will never be to a better concert than this.
I also really enjoyed the Clapton/Winwood concert we attended on June 18, 2009 at Xcel, except for the fact that I had to sit next to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law fighting about a kids barn the entire concert.

I will have to agree with my wife here. Winwood was amazing at how he could still sing like that. Clapton was Clapton, but the Neil Young concert was unbelievable. The amount of energy that man still has......I am at a loss for words.
Neil Youg hands down.

I'm going to say it was a Fugazi show in DC that was at some old church around '91. If not, then it was a Dinosaur Jr. show at the 9:30 Club around the same time.
I saw Fugazi around that same time in Rochester, MN. It was in an old dilapidated ballroom. On Wednesdays the old timers would come in and polka dance. On Fridays and Saturdays Local alt bands would play. Veruca Salt was there once, and like I said before Fugazi.
One of the regulars that I went to school with has a band with his wife. Don't know if you have heard of them, but they are Mates of State (http://www.matesofstate.com/). You might like em.

My favorite concert was my first concert.
ELO with The Michael Stanley Band as the opening act.
I was, like, 11 years old or something like that. Maybe 10. I was a huge ELO fan.
I had 9th row center. The lightshow (such as it was) was the most futuristic thing I'd ever seen.
We went backstage to hang with the band after the show. (thanks, Dad!)
It occurring to me now that THAT night is the reason I'm a musican today.
I also really enjoyed the Clapton/Winwood concert we attended on June 18, 2009 at Xcel, except for the fact that I had to sit next to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law fighting about a kids barn the entire concert.
Might want to mention that here. (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=82240)

I actually had Anti Flag drop off of a tour the day I went to see it, which was a very happy occasion. It was the Boils or the Ratchets or someone- with Anti Flag, Blood for Blood and H20. The buzz was that Blood for Blood harassed Anti Flag so mercilessly that they dropped off of the tour.
Ernie has a new band called Higher Giant, and I think he still plans to play as Gray Area from time to time.

Cool, I'll look out for Higher Giant - I hadn't heard this news. Where did the rest of the band go? I thought they were playing as The Explosion, or The Explosives, or something similar.

It's definately not The Explosion- they were younger than him and from Boston. They're pretty good though.

I was there when Traffic reunited in 1994.

When Jim Capaldi died in 05 that was pretty much it.
So I was lucky enough to see them one last time.

Tonight marks the 10th anniversary of this concert I saw and they're doing another one tonight, called Another One For Woody of course.
Wow... I remember that concert so clearly, I'm shocked it was 10 years ago.
Anyway, a lot of the original lineup from the first one are back. Can't wait!!

For my money, it's gonna be tough to beat 30 SECONDS TO MARS in concert. I've seen megastars like Prince and U2 and Bruce. And no-names like Butch Walker and Robyn. All of them pale in comparison to the experience I had at seeing 30 SECONDS.
I wasn't a tremendous fan of their music. But their shows are absolutely majestic. Their fans BREATHE that band.
