View Full Version : Is The Enemy Of Your Friend Your Enemy?
And is the friend of your enemy your enemy?
Or are you one of those people who say "Well I understand this guy raped and killed your entire family, but he's always been nice to me!"
I guess what I'm asking is how loyal are you to your true friends?

Your example is rather drastic. For the most part, if you're the enemy of my friend, I won't like you. I won't hate you, but I won't like that you've wronged someone close to me.
With that being said, if my friend hates someone for a dumb reason, I won't dislike the person. Especially if they've never done anything to me.
Regarding girlfriends and things of that nature, then yeah, the person is most likely my enemy.

I agree that your example is too drastic.
If I have 2 friends and one feels the other has wronged him, its not my business to get involved and Im not going to lose a friend that hasnt done anything wrong to me.

yeah that hypothetical is too drastic even though i know people who have actually acted like your example..loyalty is one thing, but in matters of pettiness, a true friend wouldn't ask you to choose sides which is essentially what one would be doing. it's up to that person who feels they were wronged to decided whether they want to remain friends with the friend of their enemy. asking to choose is selfish and not taking into consideration your friends happiness. but whether you react directly or indirectly if you're hurt by the "misloyalty" of a friend, you'll eventually drift apart anyway.. cest la vie.
I chose the word "enemy" because I thought it was a strong enough word to denote what I meant; someone who truly wronged a close friend of yours, not a petty argument.
I also said it was a true friend of yours that had this enemy, not a buddy or acquaintance.

well then i'd probably have to say "yes" they are, but "wronged" is subjective especially with females because we are dramatic and take little slights personally. But whatever, yeah a true friend would feel upset by their friend being wronged and take it just as personally and i never thought you meant an acquaintance.

I had 2 friends who I've known since childhood. They started going out in H.S. and went out for a long time. When they broke up, she hated his guts and he hated her guts (after they broke up, she keyed his car and cut up his convertible top). When she would get pissed off drunk, she would call his cell and curse him out. It was uncomfortable at times since I was friends with both of them and knew them for a long time. We all hung with the same group of people and when we all would get together, we would invite one person or the other, not both of them at the same time. So in that case, whose side do you pick since the enemy of my friend is my friend too.

Your example is exactly what I was talking about. When someone you deeply care about truly got fucked over by another, whether it affected you or not, you have to choose a side. If you don't, you're a selfish, egotistical prick who only cares about how things directly affect him or herself, and not a true friend at all.

My sister was married to this guy and she was a bit of a basket case, and the guy started cheating on her and eventually left her to be with the other woman. My sister was no saint, but she hated this guy after he left. I never had a problem with him, and always in my heart thought my sister was the driving force behind the break up. My sister hates this guy now with the red hot burning intensity of a thousand suns, and she expects everyone to hate him too, but I cannot hate him, and in fact, he came to my aunts funeral to pay his respects and I greeted him and hugged him and in private told him I missed him.
But my two sisters did not even look him in the eye or anything, and I think my father also gave him the cold shoulder.
So, is he my enemy? No. Should he be? Well, if my sister was not the way she is, I would think so, like if he started cheating for no reason, then yes, he would be my enemy.
But my sister now thinks I am siding with him for being nice to him at the funeral and she might look at me as her enemy now, but I am also her blood and blood is thicker than water.

Again, I thought my choice of words left little gray area. I know that makes a lot of you uncomfortable. You're the type of people who can't even play the "Nazis have your parents" game and have to try to come up with a million and one "third options."
It's cut and dry. Your true friend was WRONGED. No gray area. The person who wronged them admits it. There are 7 million eye witnesses. The wrongdoer stole your friends car, his dog, and his wife, then raped his daughter. Then he smashed his TV.
He admits it.
Everyone saw it.
But the "bad guy" didn't do anything to you personally.

I like having one forum where we can have serious discussion. Every other forum allows for goofing and derailing. I think it's invaluable to have a place where such a cross section of people can express their true opinions.
Shame that posters like sailor feel the need to perpetuate their gimmick everywhere on the board, even here.

Why do you keep coming back with that god awful example? What happened was unethical, immoral, illegal, wrong in every way possible! Would you be friends with a rapist who is also a kidnapper and a thief?
But what if your friend Bob stole your friend Steve's girl? You (Gvac) may personally believe that you never mess around with another man's girl. BUT there are people out there who think "hey, if the girl wanted to be with Bob, than her relationship wasnt meant to be. Maybe Steve should have been a better boyfriend." It is not so cut and dry.
What if Bob absolutely hates Steve because he is Jewish? Bob says "Im sorry Gvac but we can't be friends if you hang around with Steve". You and Bob have been friends since kindergarten, he got you your first job, he's married to your sister. What do you do?

I have 2 friends, they were both in my wedding. One borrowed money from the other and just made no effort to ever pay him back. Then the other one got married and didnt invite the first one. So now both of them dont like each other and they both have legitimate reasons for it.
My point is this, neither reason has anything to do with me. They are both my friends and neither one of them did anything to me. So why should I side with one or the other? I come from the school of thought that you treat others as they treat you and you mind your own business when it comes to anything else.
But like I said, its not a cut and dry issue. Now if one of them murdered the others mother...well then Id have to step back from that friendship. It all depends on the offense.
Oh and when it comes to money, I dont get involved because people should know you dont mix money with friendship. It NEVER fucking works out well.

Gvac,
this question is too important to try to limit it to a "black and white" scenario- that's not how Ying and Yang are interpreted after all, even if the symbol looks perfectly cut into even halves of black and white.
The obvious answer to your example is "yes, a-fucking course I would turn on the bastard fuck who did such a horrible thing to my friends and family".
I'll go further since we're in serious discussion land forum. Well fuck it, here goes.
Years ago, I had a friend whose drugged out ex-boyfriend broke into her home one night, beat her senseless, then kicked her down a flight of steps after she was already down, causing her to suffer a miscarriage (which turned out she was carrying her attacker's child) and spend a night at the ICU. Had a different group of her friends not already found the guy half a day later, took him into an alleyway and beat him so he never walked again, I can imagine I would have done something that would have put me behind bars. I was contemplating which bones to crush first to maximize his suffering.
I had been on the hunt for him when I received a call that he was already got to. I remember feeling happy hearing about his subsequent beating. So yes, he was my enemy, even though I never had the pleasure to meet the guy nor did he do anything to wrong me in particular.
But if some guy had a verbal fight with some other guy about some bullshit issue that isn't important in the slightest (perhaps rival sports fans) and that was that, I'm not going to wait in a parking lot for the guy who dissed my friend's sports team to his face. I have enough respect for my friends to think they can handle themselves and not need a friend cavalry to come and rescue them from that kind of massive tussle.
Happy Independence Day.
