View Full Version : Is the Hudson Going To Flood

It has rained at least a little bit every day, for something like the last 4 weeks. Right now it is pouring by me. The Hudson is a tidal estuary and has high and low tides. Do you think that the hudson might flood on high tide if this rain keeps up?

If it does...at least all the bodies in their will be returned to land...

Do you know that if every single drop of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere came down at once and it rained all over the planet the oceans would only rise by 2 inches?
If Antarctica melted, however, the oceans would rise by 200 feet.
The majority of fresh water on the planet is the ice in Antarctica.
Just a little science fact for ya, kids.

It's insane. Seriously.
Tell one you want no sugar in your coffee. They look at you like you have 3 heads.

I can't fathom how people drink that toxic sludge in the first place, much less without any delicious sugar.

That's pretty much all I drink in terms of non-alcoholic beverages.
I don't need such silly crutches to get going for the day.

That is not true, no way the oceans would rise by 200 feet, come on!
Antarctica is not as big as it appears on the map. Most maps are made using an outdated projection called the Mercator projection which distorts anything in the polar region to seem much bigger than it really is, because the Mercator projection spreads out all the longitudinal lines equally, instead of as they really are, which meet at the poles. Thats why Alaska looks so huge, but in reality is less than half the size of Texas!
Greenland looks like the size of South America, when it is no where near that size!
Antarctica is shown as being massive, but its actually this size:
http://lima.nasa.gov/img/us_vs_antarctica_sm.jpg
Granted, this is pretty big, but the ice thats on it is only really on the land, and there is a lot of land that is well above sea level on Antarctica.

wrong, alaska is 2.5 times as big as texas..
alaska 663,000 sq miles
texas 268,000 sq miles
Wrong. The ice in Antarctica averages a depth of 2 miles, whereas in the North Pole it averages only 15 feet.
There is an incomprehensible amount of ice there. MILLIONS of square miles.

I am a little off.
BUT, Greg is right about one thing:
The main ice covered landmass is Antarctica at the South Pole, with about 90 percent of the world's ice (and 70 percent of its fresh water). Antarctica is covered with ice an average of 2,133 meters (7,000 feet) thick. If all of the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters (200 feet). But the average temperature in Antarctica is -37°C, so the ice there is in no danger of melting. In fact in most parts of the continent it never gets above freezing.

They made Alaska look so big because they wanted to scare the Russians, but it is not as you guys write above. No where near that size!

I can pull up much more stuff that supports what you are saying than that, but the truth is, EVERYTHING near either pole is depicted as being 2 to 3 times bigger than it is. Look at the Mercator link I put above as well as that map that shows the "flat map" view of the round earth.

^ This. It really takes a series of odd events to make a river over flow its banks. Hudson? You'd probably need a few days straight of pouring rain over a big part of the river in march/april that ties in with mountain snow melts and some hippies peeing in the river to make it flood to any sort of damaging levels.

The 48 contiguous states and D.C. have an area of 3,119,884.69 square miles. Alaska = +/- 20% of the entire 48.
