I'll preface this by saying I am so sick of hearing about Michael Jackson but that's what got my wife and I debating over which death was a bigger deal. Elvis died before I was born but I can't imagine that people care about Michael Jackson as much as they cared about Elvis. So my 3 questions are...
1) Who was a bigger star at their prime?
2) Who's death was a bigger deal?
3) Will people make as big of a deal about Jackson 30 years from now as they do about Elvis now?

Elvis.
Elvis' death was treated like a President dying in office. It was incredible how much coverage there was.
His popularity and fame dwarfed Jackson's.

a bit overstated.
Its tough to say who was "bigger" in their prime because the world was alot "smaller" in the 80's (b/c of video/telecommunications and general accessability to pop culture).
IN the 50's how many people in the US (let alone the planet!) had a tv?
Bottom line, without Elvis, there wouldnt have been MJ.....
i really ride the fence on this one.

Was Elvis as popular as Michael is around the world? I think not, but I could be wrong.

If we go by best impersonator...

Agreed. Lennon's was big too and both were before 24-hour news coverage.

MJ was bigger in life.
Elvis was bigger in death. And continues to be.

This is insane- Elvis does indeed dwarf MJ. People treated Elvis like he was dangerous, he shocked people, and you can actually listen to his music. MJ is the toothless, commercialized and coopted version of a soul singer. He's a boderline minstrel show.
