I am a stay at home mom. Recently we have been in a bind for money. I think I have to get a job. I don't want to. I like what I do now, and I don't want anymore responsibility.

I used to have a daycare, but it just got in the way of our life. I loved the kids, but it was too hard to take care of my own kids.

So...any ideas on how to come up with a massive amount of money without getting a job???

Just wanted to get this off my chest. A few jokes wouldn't hurt. Rhino does an awesome job of supporting our family. It is my fault for the money bind....FYI

I understand. I do not want to go back to work either but I have burned through savings, and now only have my check from the military to support me. This check is not going as far as I wish it would. Now in a bind I am looking for a job. In your case though you have kiddos which makes the decision tougher. Daycare will suck the money from you, is there a Montessori nearby that both takes care of them and gives them an education? Does your church have a program like a daycare?

So you used to have day care but it got in the way.

You can't take care of your own kids by yourself....but you are a stay at home mom and like what you "do"?

And your family, i.e. your husband and children, are in a bind now because of you?

I'm sorry if this comes across as blunt but to me you sound incredibly selfish.

chill, you are reading things into her post.
Having your own kids AND other kids in your home as a daycare is definitely harder because your kids need to learn the hard way to share your time and attention during the day. To make it worse, parents take advantage of the caregivers and overstay their welcome.... or start conversations and chats with you when they already pick their kids u late... and you never get enough time to take care of your own household, feed your family, go grocery shopping or spend some quality time with your kids and husband!
Having a home daycare is 10 times harder than any 9-5 job with kids in daycare or at school all day!

You sound very ignorant in your "blatant" post, cause you don't know much about having your own family!

Does anyone around you need a nanny? It's less stressful than having a house full of kids, and the money's pretty decent. Also, you could be a stay-at-home during the Summer, then get a job while the kids are at school in the Fall. You might be able to have the best of both worlds.

I don't care that i don't have my own rugrats running around, it doesn't make me know "less" about children, or make you know more because you have one. I have nephews and i have been around multiple kids at once in atmospheres where i was a babysitter.

I am not in attack mode, you are still misreading her post and having babysat for kids, nephews and being around kids still does not mean you have any insight on raising a family and being a mother.

I don't assume anything about anyone's life. Especially people that only exist to me in the context of a messageboard.

I wasn't rubbing it in her face to make her feel terrible about herself, i just don't see any kind of real caring on her part that she is the one responsible for their current economic situation and consequently, the lack of motivation to get her family out of a problem she created.

It has nothing to do with being a parent in terms of child rearing, it has more to do with being responsible for the children you created and the family that now exists around it.

Posting a thread on a messageboard airing the fact that you are having financial difficulties and then asking for quick money making solutions is not terribly indicative of a mother and wife who is taking a problem they created seriously but maybe that is just me.

I just had to do the same cause of unemployment and amazingly enough, with no daycare expenses and rethinking and cutting down on a few luxuries I am actually able to get by for as long as the UI remains.

I 100% agree with you. Not having kids doesn't mean that people can't have an educated opinion about people that do. To me we might even have a bit of a better prospective because we aren't in the middle of the situation.

As for the OP if you are the cause of the money bind then you are obligated to help fix the bind, it's also not fair to let your husband shoulder the whole burden children or no children you are partners in the marriage.

Hmmm, from what I read in the original post I thought she was asking for advice on how to maybe make some extra money without having to go back to work.

So while everyone else is on their soapbox, Im going to give a suggestion (For the record, Im with Mikeyboy)

Biggirl, I dont know you so I dont know what youre good at, but this is something me and my wife put together for extra cash. It didnt stop the need for both of us to work but it did help with extra money.

We started doing cakes. At first simple ones you see in AC Moore with the shaped cake pans, but now we are actually doing stuff like you see on Ace of Cakes. My wife is really good at cooking and baking and Im pretty creative when it comes to design. Together weve been making good money taking cake orders. Everytime we sell a cake we throw business cards in there and I post the picture on my Facebook. Its been doing very well. Next step is our own website (which I will shamelessly plug here when I get it up and running)

So if youre a good baker or cook, something like cakes or catering might be an easier way to make money from home. And its tax free. I dont know, it was just a suggestion.

I would like to point out that this is a very well written and insightful post and is appreciated. Thank you sir. Good model.

Get over yourself please, your gimmick sucks worse than Jezo's.

Running the daycare interfered with taking care of her own. She loved the kids.
She also admitted she was a main source of the problem and is just looking for advice.
Pretty clear to me.

Exactly.

Yes it does

Thank you.

I am sorry that i am unfamiliar with the insights to this woman's (?) life. I didn't take any type of indignation and even apologized for the fact that what i had to say might seem blunt.

Sorry i don't pussyfoot or coddle people whom i have absolutely no relationship with. It's not the biggest crime in the world that she is having money issues but frankly the fact that it's her own fault and that she is bemoaning the fact that she (GASP) has to probably work to get her family out of her own debt is nothing that i feel compassionate about.

This coming from the chick who lives with her boyfriend's parents and has never been a parent.

Dude!

Wow...I really thought this thread would die right away. First off...I think it is hilarious that grlNIN started off the way she did. I love arguments. And...I reread my post, and my grammar is incorrect. It did sound like I don't like watching my own kids (some cases that is true).

Anyhow, I like being a stay at home mom and caring for my children only. My son has Aspergers...he is a real challenge, my daughter is a diva. It takes my whole day to accommodate them and all night to relax for the next day's events.

I have watched other people's kids. The kids aren't the problem...the parents are the problem. Plus I have to work about a 10-11 hour day with no lunch hour or breaks. It is a real drag.

Rhino and I are old fashioned thinkers. The husband works and supports the family, and the wife stays home takes care of the house and family.

The money problem comes from my overspending. I love to shop. I have quit shopping for now except for the necessities. We have a lot of toys and a lot of fun = costs a lot of money. We'll get through it.

BTW grlNIN: I am real, and I am spectacular!

I liked the cake idea. I can make really cool cakes, like mario brothers and barbies mud wrestling cakes.

I'm in your boat too BigGirl. I'm a stay at home Dad but both my kids will be in school fulltime in the fall. We can use the extra dough but I don't want to go back to the corporate world. I hate the travel and want to stay close to the kids. The cake idea is a great one, there are lots of things to do if you think outside the box.

I have been doing a lot of film, tv and commercial extra work because they film a lot in my area. I joined the union and they call me when they need me. It works for me. So I'm thinking that's what I'll be doing for a few extra bucks when the summer ends.

Good luck to you and Rhino.

And send me a cake.

hey Gwen, somebody had posted this on .net once and I am making good use of it; there is a site called Mint.com where you can manage all your accounts and set a budget. It helps keeping track and sends you e-mails when/ as soon as you overspend on one of your budget items.
My friend who recently lost her job did a lot of calling around to reduce monthly costs on tv/ phone and internet... home and car insurance and set up a monthly budget... they are saving over 500/ month on that alone.

I love the cake or maybe kids b-day party catering idea... anything you can do from home while being with the kids.
I know how hard it is to get anything done though, ever since I am home my son will not leave my side... from bathroom to cleaning and cooking... he is right next to me at all times, if anyhow possible he is on top of me cause he cannot stand to not have my attention.

Thanks for the advice Katja. I just read this crazy book called America's Cheapest Family. It is helping me out a lot, but the budget is tricky. I may just check that website you mentioned. Right now, we are in the problem of what we can give up for awhile just to pay down some debt. It is hard to get rid of the fun stuff when you are used to having it.
