I actually saw a guy with a walkman the other day.
And even he had the old school metal headband earphones.

It was trippy just to see they still exist.

I think my dad has one. He doesn't throw anything away. I'm the same way, I guess. Though I don't have a cassette player, I still have 15 or 20 tapes. I really should throw them away. They're just copies of albums and CD's that I already have. I drove an old pickup for a while 9 years ago, and all it had was a tape deck (hence the tapes of my albums and CD's.)

I kept all of my old shit and passed it on to my 11 year-old son who gets a kick out it and showing it off to people. Just today he had a friend over and they were up in his room playing with my old Intellivision.

Stuff currently in my son's room: Intellivision, Atari, ColecoVision ADAM computer (circa 1983), Sony Walkman with my collection of cassettes, turntable stereo with my collection of LPs, handheld Coleco Electronic Quarterback game.

They should have done the story using a Discman. At least most of the popular Walkmen out there could be easily clipped onto your pants or belt or pocket or even fit into a pocket if the pants were baggy enough. Discmen were much more of a pain in the ass to haul around and use on the go.

They were fine, as long as you didn't move at all.

I remember finally getting one of the "skip-proof" ones and thinking it was the greatest thing ever.

I'm calling bullshit. 13-year-olds don't talk like that. Even British ones.

Comparing the original Sony Walkman to an iPod Touch is like comparing a black and white TV to a Sharp Aquos; there is only a mild similarity between the two products. My most recent Walkman is a Panasonic that is only mildly larger than a cassette tape box, takes a single AA battery and lasts a staggering 12 hours without failure.

Many products developed during the era of the original Walkman were designed to look "large enough" to be functional because of the consumer's preconceived notions regarding product form factor and its effect on functionality. In addition, Sony predicted that their customers would want more functions and not fewer functions. As the product aged, they scaled away unnecessary features and slimmed down others.

Why not give him a competitor's MP3 player and watch him marvel at how much faster files load to it?

That was my initial thought.

There isn't a poster here with that "13 year old's" writing skills.

I don't know.

A 13 year old smart ass from the UK is easily comparable to a graduate of MIT here.
