I'm sick of people thinking that saying African American is sensitive and progressive. If you're from Africa and prefer to be called that, it's one thing. But blacks whose families have been in this country for hundreds of years should give it up. Just say black already.

All black people from Jamaica are of descent from African slaves, hence the Pan-Africanist movements (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-Africanist) supported and started by people like badass mofo Jamaican Marcus Garvey.

The native, non-black populations of Jamaica were essentially wiped out centuries ago.

My favorite African-American story came during the OJ Simpson murder trial when everyone was walking on eggshells about race to begin with.

Christopher Darden (who is black) was talking about a black witness who was a neighbor of Nicole's. He didn't really have much to say, but it was obvious that the only reason the prosecution called him was to show they actually had a black guy on their side.

He was from England and spoke with a thick British accent. Darden, like the prosecution always did, tried to be super-politically correct and began to introduce the guy as:

"An African-Ameri . . . uh. . . British citizen of Afric . . . Umm . . . he's English."

People are way to sensitive and so long as you're not purposely trying to offend, I don't see the big deal. If you prefer to be called one thing, just politely correct the person.

Black is a race, African-American is a nationality, no???

Depends, if i am in a regular conversation "black" but i always get somewhat uncomfortable when having to describe someone who is black in front of another black person, so then i say "African American". This typically happens at my job, where i actually work with a younger woman who is from Jamaica.

One of the other nurses is from Puerto Rico and she refers to whites as "Caucasians" and i find that a little off putting that she just doesn't say white.
