Google Voice wants to be the center of your voice communications. The Web-based service combines a lot of things: a permanent follow-around phone number; voice mail with transcriptions; and text messaging, to name a few
Add something that can actually compete with iTunes, a service like Hulu/Netflix and Google can be your all around source for entertainment and communication.

I thought that was more like a forwarding service you still need your individual carriers IE: land line and wireless service. But it sounds like this would bring them all together nicely

I am still looking into it, I think I may of been mislead by the original summary. I am working on a home network problem but will post more when I find out.

I just got my invite and set up my account.
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="https://clients4.google.com/voice/embed/webCallButton" width="230" height="85"><param name="movie" value="https://clients4.google.com/voice/embed/webCallButton" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="FlashVars" value="id=ae47a143578ea79f4992ddd6646a115e53fbe5fa&style=0" /></object>
Anyone want to call me and leave me a message? Not really sure how this thing works but yeah, push that button and it supposedly will ring my voice mail. You enter your phone number into the box, push the button. Then it will ring your personal phone and from there connect to my Google Voice account.
Someone try it so I can see if it works.

I think you're confusing Google Voice with Google Talk.
Google Voice is a service where Google gives you a new phone number and forwards calls to your existing home/cell/etc. phones so they all ring at the same time. It also provides visual voicemail, SMS forwarding and other neat features.
Google Talk is a voice/chat program that you can use on your computer/phone to make VOIP calls, chat and check your Gmail.

I just started reading: US and Canada are supposed to be free, Mexico is a small fee, and anywhere else in the world varies in the fee attached. But I am only at paragraph 2 of 7.

Can i get an invite?
Some people on the droid boards are saying that now this application only need its own number.
So literally, if i wanted to with my Droid.....couldnt i just get the unlimited data package for my phone with no voice minutes and use this?
