So I'm looking to reformat my pc that didn't come with a vista disc.

My pc has been kinda sluggish and kinda just want to clean it out and start fresh.

How do I go about doing this when I wasn't provided a vista disc. I don't want to have to pay for the windows os. If that's the case ill just trash it and have a linux box

See if you have a "recovery partition" on your hard drive. it might have a disc image of the install disk you can burn.

Microsoft actually gives PC makers a price break on Windows if they don't include physical discs, as an anti-piracy move.

I bought my hp's (older xp) and had to make my own rescue disk.
If you look around on your os you might have that option.

By the way, I hate the concept of the "recovery partition" with a passion, because what if I'm having to reinstall Windows because the hard drive itself shit the bed and I have to replace it?

That's one thing I will definitely give Dell props for: they have always included an actual Windows disk with their systems. And it's not even a bullshit "recovery disk" that puts all the other crap back on with it: it's just Windows. Very cool.
