... a pig nothing but herbs and spices like garlic, rosemary, basil, onions, etc. , would it taste like the things you fed it?

Would this work with any farm raised animal?

Would the animal die from lack of proper nutrition?

or

Could we start a new species of each farm raised animal for human consumption that is ultra tasty?

If all you ate was shrimp, you'd be pink.

This sounds like a question Dr. Steve could shed a little light on..

I'd say Chip is even more qualified than Dr. Steve to answer this one.

What an animal eats is defintiely going to affect the way it tastes, but I am pretty sure that tasty herbs will not provide the proper nutrients (at least not for a cow). I dont' know much about Swine.

I know we use combinations of grasses to get a right blend of nutrients, I can't imagine basil is going to accomplish the same thing.

But in theory ... Garlic flavored pork loin sounds amazing.

That's where I was going with this.

What would you, or anyone, feed an animal if you knew it affected the taste of the meat?

I propose we take a pig and raise it like veal, but only feed it sage, garlic, and butter..

Mmmmmmmmm..

I would only let it drink BBQ sauce.

If I said I had a pig farm and you have a potential job, what would you say?

I know that if you feed maple syrup to a duck or a goose it changes the flavor of the fois gras and meat you get, so I assume it would be the same way for the pig.

Maintaining proper nutrition for any animal you plan to eat is important. If I were you I would mix the herbs into the regular feed, and not use the herbs as the primary food source.

no but it's shit would make a lovely pesto.

I think they feed marigolds to chickens to make their skin yellow...maybe you could eat your way to becoming Asian.

Cattle, chickens, and pigs have very different digestive system.

Cattle are rumenants and have multiple stomach that allow them to utilize grasses and such.

Birds don't really have a stomach and the gizzard is where the food is ground up for digestion.

Pigs have much the same digestive system as we do.

Quality of feed affect each one for sure, but you're not going to be able to preseason the meat though the diet.

And no, a pig would never thrive on a diet of garlic and herbs.

Gordon Ramsay did this with his pigs, he fed 1 or 2 of them beer to flavor them up.

I've been known to feed beer to pigs...while it didnt make them taste better, it did make them easier to nail.

Underdog will tell you, Chef Ramsey raised pigs on F word and fed one of them beer along with its regular food. There was a difference in the taste of the meat but I don't remember how great it was.

Let's try feeding a pig nothing but bacon and butter.
