Four faces of American music that changed it forever - just like the real Mt. Rushmore.

No "I'm making all 6 members of this band count as one face" bullshit.

FOUR FUCKING FACES.

NO MORE.

TRUE ICONS.

NOT who you think is "good" but WHO IS ICONIC.

Because we're talking traffic stopping MEGA stars.

Guys (or gals) who got MOBBED in their prime and everyone in the country knew who they were.

Muddy Waters, unfortunately, never enjoyed that kind of success.

Let's see: Armstrong practically invented jazz
Sinatra changed singing and lyrical interpretation
Elvis and Michael aren't iconic?

Pop icons. Superstars.

That kind of popularity PLUS wide ranging influence.

Armstrong did not practically invent jazz. not even close
sinatra was very popular, but didn't really change music
Elvis is a good example.

I think you are underestimating the influence that Dylan had on popular music. at the very least, he should be there for introducing the beatles to weed.

But Dylan was the first performer to combine Folk and Blues with Rock, pretty much defining much of what we now call 'classic rock'

the thing morrison should get credit for is taking mediocre lyrics and making them sound sexy as fuck. As a singer, he was amazing.

Think of Mount Rushmore. There's not a Mount Rushmore for Presidents of the early 1800's and presidents of the late 1800's.

Or democratic presidents or Republican. There is one and only one.

But it was made during those times.

Why can't we make one for our times?

I don't think there's been one president since who should be on such a monument.

Given a chance to make a change?

I imagine there would have been a few.

Not simple, but not difficult. You have to give consideration to the prime of the star. And their impact. Elvis even though I honestly wonder about his worldwide appeal at the time his impact more than makes up for his spot. He's the highest selling artist ever. He's in solid. Elvis did one important thing. He broke down doors. He made music sexy way before Justin Timberlake.

Michael Jackson has the massive appeal no one had seen or will probably ever see again in music. Elvis was great, no denying that. But Michael Jackson is only considered great because there's no real adjective that fits beyond the word great. Even Elvis would tell you this. His selling power wasn't quite up to Elvis' but then he has a much smaller catalog. And Elvis can't say he had the biggest selling album of all time, then turn around and say he did it twice.

These two men are in solidly. No one can take away their style, impact and influence.

The one thing that is important is this is American music. And sadly the other forces at work here, like The British who took the ball and ran with it for years much better don't count.

So we take American music to it's roots. One figure in my book I can't deny his respect is a man that basically invented his own genre of music. Like Elvis started at Sun Records, and made over 100 hit singles. If Michael Jackson is a master for crossing over into pop and rock from r&b Johnny Cash gets credit for crossing over into everything. The man sang, the man rapped before rap was born, the man influenced every genre of music. If it was nothing more than by being in all black. Johnny Cash's influence in American music is unmistakable.

Since we are basing it on American music, Madonna's influence on American music is strange because as most of us are men we didn't witness it firsthand. Ask any woman performing today and she's on the list somewhere. She made music a business model practically everyone follows today. She generated over 1.2 billion in just the first half of her career. She was just as 80's as Michael Jackson, and just as stageworthy. Although Madonna innovated and changed and adapted better than anyone. Michael Jackson professed his love for the youth, Madonna was one of them. Madonna may not span the generational lines like Jackson, but her audience grew up with her. Second top-selling female artist in the United States with sixty-three million certified albums. She has sold over two-hundred million albums worldwide. In 2008, she surpassed Elvis Presley as the artist with most top ten hits in the history of Billboard Hot 100.

Buddy Holly
Jimi Hendrix
Neil Diamond
Bruce Springsteen

All very popular and influential in their genres (even though I know obviously Dylan influenced Springsteen)

Let's see: Armstrong practically invented jazz
Sinatra changed singing and lyrical interpretation

Armstrong did more than that. He actually changed singing and lyrical interpretation (not to mention what he did instrumentally, socially, international ambassador, etc, etc etc).
He changed and started everything.

I don't know who the other 3 should be, but Louis Armstrong belongs on the list.

I don't care about your silly rules of popularity or fucking grandmothers recognizing people. If you're doing something named "Mt. Rushmore of American Music" and Miles Davis isn't on it, then your little Mount Rushmore is the 16th hole of a putt putt golf course.

And now I have to turn my back.

you know, browsing this thread there are only a few more that would also be recognized internationally... so yes, Miles Davis would be, as much as Armstrong... but there were a few mentioned that nobody outside of the US would ever recognize

Ben Weasel is a yes, to me Joe Queer is just diet Ben Weasel and by that token could use Dr. Frank. I'd only want the first half of Fat Mike or Tim Armstrong's career. How about 6 months of the year Tim has to let Jesse from Op Ivy up there, and Fat Mike has to wear a Descendants T Shirt.

Actually I dont know what I was thinking, Milo trumps Queer.

But this is only a pop punk Rushmore, if it gets expanded to punk wide it gets a lot harder.

Pop punk is my bread and butter. I was considering Dr. Frank and Billie Joe, then it could be a Lookout! Records mt rushmore.
