View Full Version : Does WoW make you think less of someone?

A friend of yours brings up one day that he's a big fan of World of Warcraft, is a member of a guild and has numerous level XX characters ("toons" as they're called)... do you instinctively make any value judgments about these people, regardless of how well or not well you knew them before they told you this?
I play the game casually from time to time, but this does not stop me from hypocritically thinking less of a person if they tell me this stuff.
I guess I should emphasize that for me this looking down on another thing is only an initial feeling that I get beyond pretty quickly, but it usually takes me at least a day to stop thinking they're weirdos.
Final point of double-standards set by me: I feel no prejudice towards a girl if she tells me she plays. I actually find that cool.

I dunno. If I found out my friend was making real money off of WoW, I'd kind of have more respect for him and his habit.

Not my game genre and do not play it. But having a love for PC games I know how fanboish people get.
I don't know what any of that means, however I did see a trucker with a WoW bumper sticker yesterday. I didn't look down up him for the WoW sticker, rather the dirt under his nails.

I started to look down on myself for playing WoW too much. I have 2 80 toons, my Priest was gearing up pretty well then when my friends left the game I leveled a Druid. When they came back I geared up my Druid pretty well and now that is my main.
I still have my original Warlock at level 72. Multiple alts I still fart around with. That's TOO MUCH Goddamn it, it gets to the point where it's an obsession.
Problem with WoW is to play it well you have to give WAY too much of your time, more than you should. The part of the game, the multiplayer interaction, makes it a very different kind of game, but having to worry about other people's schedules and emotions as you try to do stuff is the downfall of it too.
You just can never get a group of people who are all cool to play the game. Attitudes pop up, greed for gear drops comes into play, someone isn't there one night and gets replaced now they have their feelings hurt.
So yea, I try to just fart around the game every now and then. I don't turn it on for a week or two sometimes. It's just a game, you can't let it get out of hand. My playing did and I'm not going to let that happen again.
But people get hooked on lots of different games, I don't think people should look down on WoW players anymore than the others.

Well Moe, you are right about the time thing and that is my main issue with the genre. I do not have the patience to sit back and gradually level up. I also do not like more linear games. I want to get in, fuck some shit up, beat up on some little faggy kids, and get out. I can not spen 8 hours playing one game, hell Crysis i could/can only play a max of 3 hours of it.

Well if you're willing to PVP for weeks after you level your toon to 80 you can log on, fuck up 12 year olds and log off.
Yea, that's gay I know, I don't PVP. It sucks.
Like I said, the same aspects of the game that make it different and interesting are the parts of it that can get bad.

My brain has to focus on more than one thing, I have always been that way but became worse after my last mental crash. For example; that is why I like site like this with multiple topics yet currently I have a tab open with news and a tab open for National Geographic. I am going to play some TF2 later but will plug my MP3 into it's speaker set and crank some Linkin Park or something with a similar fast beat. Hell, just before I play it is a ritual for me to play "Bleed it Out."

OH totally. I'm always listening to XM202 with the sound down on WoW if I'm playing. I am possibly talking to guild mates in game at the same time. If I have to fly somewhere in the game I will tab out of the game and start surfing the net.
I understand that. I need to keep my mind overly occupied all the time.

Even barking out over mic I sometimes have to turn down the music because I wear a surroun sound headset when seriously gaming so I really have to crank the music to hear it.

Well "fun shit" is subjective. But I see your point and agree because I've let it stop me from going out and doing things I should have and I won't let it do that again.
It is a great winter game though, since it's harder to do things outside for too long when the temp dips low.

Although the commercials, it looks like it sucks. But alot of decent people have shitty taste in games. Im talkin to you, Final Fantasy fans.

I can't stand it when it's nice and sunny outside and some friends would rather stay inside to kill a centaur instead of going to the beach or going into the city.
Winter does pass by a bit faster with the game, im sure, but there is still other things to do. I also feel that my friends haven't progressed past that video game.

a guy i work with is into it, and all sorts of role playing stuff. he sometimes forgets to collect print outs from our shared printer (character sheets, directions to conventions, etc). i find it kind of odd, but i guess it's a hobby he enjoys, so whatever.
though he has taken time off from work to go to conventions, which i thought was a bit much.

I think it starts getting pathetic when your life starts progressing faster in fantasy land than it does in real life, and when your online persona garners more prestige and respect than you get from your real world friends, family, and coworkers.

Well as a guy who had a 4 night a week Raid schedule and now doesn't even play the toon I was gearing, I won't argue with you. The game holds a little fun for me here and there but is essentially dead in my life. You really NEED to dedicate time to Raids to get gear and learn fights and I don't think I'm willing to do that anymore. Even if it is winter.
It's very sick how quickly you get sucked in.

I stayed away from WoW for the first 2+ years it came out. All of my friends were playing it. I finally cracked and bought it last year (right around this time last year actually). I figured that if my friends are on and with a newborn kid coming, I'd be home plenty to play it.
One of the pluses of the game is that I do the occasional instance with my one friend who lives in GA when he's at college. It's good to be able to talk with him while we're killing baddies.
Heather started playing it about 6/7 months ago. If she would have stuck with one character instead of having 1 character above 40 and another 10 (at one time or another) below level 15), she'd be right up there with me with a solid level 80 toon.
If you play WoW, I have no problem with that. If you're Horde and routinely whoop my shaman's ass in PVP, then I have a problem... :)

i started playing in january of this year... i have a lvl 60 druid toon. thats it. its on a pvp (bloodscalp) which makes things take a lot longer then it should (fucking horde keeps killing me and then camping my corpse when im questing). if i really put time into it, i would have been an 80 by now, but i like things like sunshine and fresh air. meh.

I like them for the first month or two. I'll sit there (like i am doing with the WoW trial) for hours and hours just leveling up and wasting time. But so far every single one has not held on after that, I get bored of them and want to move on to something else.
