So...

I moved all my music files to my external hard drive, merged my hard drive partitions and reformatted.

Now, all my files are green (encrypted) colored now that I reloaded XP onto my clean drive and will not play. Im guessing this is a certificate deal, but this really doesnt make sense since I never encrypted them in the first place.

Anyone else had this problem? I just lost about 40 gigs of music, most of which is ripped from cd's I likely no longer have in possession.

Any advice or this happen to anyone else???????? HELP!!!????????

Devastation. :surrender:

There are a couple reasons this can happen. The primary reason is that you reloaded your OS after a format getting rid of all the little certificates if you used WMA format. These are usually stored in a little hidden folder with in your user profile.

Another reason is that you accidentally turned on HD encryption and you lost the decrypt algorithm when you reformated but this is unlikely.

So, maybe I erased my user profile and certificates, which makes me very angry. Im going to try some crazy xp professional tips I got this evening to try to revive them, but I dont have my hopes up.

And I would download all the albums again, but a lot of music I had is not available through torrents.

Fuck.

there are a lot of sites out that there that cater especially to music. you just need to know where to look. Also they only allow people in that can seed and what not.

I forgot the name of some.

Will it allow you to convert them to mp3s or not access them at all?

Dude, use mp3s in the future, it's the universal music file. You can give it to anyone no matter what kind of player they have.

And MP3s do not have the stupid WMA DMA certificate crap that Windows restricts you with. Yes, MP3s do carry DMA but they carry the certificate with them and not separate if I remember correctly.
