I will be working on two laptops for a friend. Both of them most likely will need a new CD/DVD drive. For some reason, I'm having a huge problem finding them for sale online. Newegg only offers one, from what I can see. THIS ONE. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=27-106-299)

Here's my question... It says it's SATA.

One of the laptops is a Dell Inspiron 1150. The other is an HP Compaq Presario V6000. I can't tell if they can use an SATA optical drive.

Can anyone tell me if this drive will work in these laptops? And, if it won't, does anyone have any links to an alternative optical CD/DVD drive that WILL work in these laptops?

More than likely it's a PATA or IDE drive if it's older.

Do you have it with you?

Can you take it out?

Amazon has them, they're hard to find in stores. I was at CompUSA yesterday and they had one to choose from.

I won't have them here until Friday.

Both are IDE controllers so you can not interchange the drive, try Ebay.

I hate working on laptop hardware... At least the dvd drive is easy, its usually one screw and it pulls out...

Hard drives are another story.. I still have about 20 screws left over on this one, fucking ribbon cables are made by satan.

Well, that just sucks! I guess they will probably have to go the exteral route. I doubt that can be done in the $40 price range, though.

Awesome! I just hope there's more like this when I have the laptops here! Thanks, bro.

Chances are they probably arent that hot of an item, if the auction ends before you need them you could probably contact the seller and ask if they still ahve them or not.

depends on the make.
I just changed hard drives on 2 dell lappys; 2 or 3 screws they popped right out, take it off of the bracket, REMEMBER TO PULL THE IDE ADAPTER AND PUT IT ON THE NEW ONE, and put it back in.

-yes, many many people forget that there is a little adapter on the back, and wonder why the new HD doesn't fit.

Very good point.
