I have the original 360. The one with component cables. I bought it a few months after it was released however many years ago.
This past weekend playing a game it froze. I didn't think anything of it as it was an online game and blamed the connection.
Fast forward to last night and I booted it up. And as I'm about to play a game the speakers pop and the 360 freezes again. And again and again.
No red rings. Just freezes. Could its video card be el poocho?
Will microsoft fix it even tho its old?

warranty period?
is todays date beyond the warranty period?
if so, then they won't fix.

I assume it is. I have to dig out the recipt. I know I paid for extra warranty but I'm pretty sure its over. I got 3 yrs extra.
How long is the manufacturers 360 warranty for? 90 days?

If it started freezing, it's getting ready to red ring. Register the console on xbox.com and it will tell you exactly what you have for a warranty.
You should have a full three years since purchase for red ring warranty, and I would lay a good chunk of cash that you're in the opening stages of three red ring

Fyi, I've returned three 360s to microsoft and it's always a quick process. You'll get a newer, albiet refurbished console that has a better cooling system and very likely a quiter dvd drive and fan. Harder to hack, but that's not a big deal for most. If you don't qualify for a warranty,I've fixed a few red rings myself that have gone over a year without incident. Not difficult for the average person to do, if you don't wanna buy a new console.

Same as above. I'd go the refurbish route. It was like $120 from Microsoft, but it came with another year warranty, and like above, it comes with updated drive, and cooling is a lot better. My refurbished one is over 2 years old now, and it's a work horse. I rock the netflix, and am a daily gamer. It was worth my money, for a 4 day turn around.

I'd get it flashed and have the guy who does it also apply the plastic washers on the mobo and better fan.

Well, I have developed a three ringaroo of death!
I called future shop where I got it and I have till sept of 09 for my warranty. So I'm good.
If I'm still covered, I assume I won't be paying this 120 that yoy guys are talking about?
Also, will I be getting a 360 with hdmi? Mine is components.

I'm
rockin' three of those bitches right now. Xclamp mod with a whisper fan works like a charm, plus the whisper makes the back of your xbox glow and shit.

Most refurbs will have hdmi these days so I would say yer prolly cool there. Last two I sent in were component and they came back hdmi with liteon drives. And a hundred twenty is a rip for a refurb. I picked up a red ring with a good warranty seal for fifty bucks on ebay and sent it in to microsoft to fix, new refurb xbox for fifty bucks as opposed to over a hundred

They only make them with HDMI now, so hopefully for you, yes. With the new boards, you shouldn't have any more problems.

Be careful with that - they check S/Ns at some stores now (and if they are really thorough they may check the other S/N location on the chassis.)

Did ya try that crazy "wrap it in a towel and let it run for 20 minutes" thing?

remove the battery, put it in a bowl of rice and then blow it with a blow dryer

It works... For about a month, then you're console is usually fucked for good, and you have no warranty.

Do the towel trick, then switch out the guts and do this.
They do check serial #'s.

Ya its a few month shy of being 3 yrs. So ya I guess I am lucky. I have played my share of games on it. But I'm sure nowhere near what some do. Hours a day for weeks on end. Hey, its covered. I'm happy. Now I guess the new one I get will be covered for the red ring problem. And I won't have to pay for a replacement if it does screw up

Ask about an extension on it just to see if they offer it.
