This is a semi-serious/legit question. In the fall i will be going to school in Newark and my classes will end at 9pm. I'm starting to get somewhat nervous about the idea of walking back to my car that late, especially when it starts to get dark out very early.

Maybe Chris would know this stuff the best but is mace illegal? What's the difference between that and pepper spray? Are there any other kinds of things i could carry that would be good in terms of self defense or anything related?

I don't necessarily think that part of Newark is "bad" (MLK Blvd and surrounding campus) but at that time of night in conjunction with how near/far i park and i don't know.

My wife works in Newark, I bought her pepperspray. But she parks right across from her building's entrance and she can request a police escort if she wants.

I bought it at The Sports Authority by the camping supplies.. I think any sporting goods store carries it.

if you are going to rutgers or NJIT, i went there so I know the area. it is not the best, I will say that. just stay on the main walkways and you will be fine. do not try to take a shortcut to get some where 2 mins quicker, it is not worth it. where are you going to be parking?

Mace is usually restricted, but pepper spray or OC is widely available. It stings. Also, if it sits for a while, dust and lint can collect on the nozzle which will fuck you up if you try to deploy it. Keep it clean. Stay away from "fog" or "mist" types and go with a "stream" type, which is less likely to effect the deployer in a windy, outdoor situation.

Rutgers. I think i will have to park in Deck 1 on the adjacent street from MLK, though my classes are in 2 buildings and the walk between the 2 is only 5 minutes apart.

I didn't know you could get P.S. at sports stores, i was going to go to Army/Navy actually to see if they carried any.

I know up here it is illegal to carry that stuff but if you are a mail carrier you can carry a personal size "dog repellent". Its small in size and usually has a keychain on the end. I know you can buy them at outdoor sporting good stores like Cabelas. When you buy them here you have to fill out a form and if you ask for it for reasons other then above they will refuse to sell it to you. My b/f wanted a can of bear spray and had to fill the same form out. Good thing he didn't want a gun.

Mace is a brand name that makes all sorts of chemical agents, but as a generic term it refers to CN (teargas), which can be sprayed as well as deployed in those anti-hippy grenades you see in movies. CN is more regulated then Pepperspray (OC), which is made from Oleo-Capsicum or something like that, the compound in peppers that makes them spicy.

Dude!

This might not help you nin since I doubt they have these in nice portable sizes but I thought it was interesting. Can Chris or Sarge confirm this? I got it in an email from my aunt.

Wasp Spray

I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. Thought this was interesting and might be of use...

Your going to be fine. Just dont walk up James St. Otherwise it really isnt that big a deal. There is enough schools there that there is usually a good number of people, and nothing will really happen.

Just dont go up James St. Although they have started buying people out of Baxter Terrace, too

Pepper Spray, on the other hand, has the effect of putting a brick wall in between the assailant and the sprayer. When someone gets a full blast of OC pepper spray, they stop what they are doing. They stop what they are thinking. Even people previously mentioned that could withstand the effects of tear gas, are very personally affected by OC pepper spray. This includes people that are drunk, on drugs, or psychotic
