Just reminding everyone to check your fluids.
Most people never do and then its to late.
Oil SHOULD be checked every gas fill up. If your leaking it should be more. Never rely one sensors.
Transmission fluid should be checked with the vehicle on.
Brake fluid should be checked at least every couple hundred miles at any time.
Power steering fluid should be checked as often as the brake fluid. If you have a slight whining noise this might help.
Coolant. Check it while you check your oil. very easy to look at the bottle. Make sure you are using the right fluid if you need to re-fill.
While you are at it you should check you air filter.

I just hate hearing of stories of people that have to replace pats at 20 times the price of decent preventative maintenance.
A few weeks ago i could have saved my friend a few hundo if he would have went my route with car stuff. He ended up having to borrow money from his mom who doesnt have much anyway.

I just bought an 04 Hyundai Santa Fe with 50k miles on it about 2 months ago. Since then, I've but about 2k miles on it.
What are some standard things that I should have done to the car...such as belts and whatnot?
My mechanic checked it over when I bought it and gave it a good bill of health. The belts do make a little noise after it rains, as do the brakes...but I think that's normal.
It's in excellent shape and has new tires.

I've been keeping a close eye on mine as of late. Last week I started my car and a big plume of white smoke came out of my exhaust which means "head gasket" soon. Pretty much just waiting for milky oil. At that point it's up to my buddy's garage with my shiny new Craftsman tools to learn how to do it. Thankfully he's a mechanic 20 years now.

Check the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual. You're probably getting close to a timing belt and trans fluid change.

on average that is the cheapest vehicle in America to insure.
Moe has a great point in checking the owners manual. In the back they usually have "scheduled maintenance" in there. Its a good place to start.
Id check the air filter if you live or drive on dirty roads. Id go with k&n. they are more expensive but last forever with proper care and can get you maybe 1 mpg or so depending on how you intake is.
Also you can visually check your belt. minor spider web cracks are ok but anything beyond that you should replace them. But they are very cheap you could jsut replace them to see if the squealing to stop. But if they only do it after the rain, you are more than likely getting them wet by just driving anywhere thus lubricating them enough to squeak. You can also go to your local auto body store to pick up "belt dressing" you spray on the belts to help.
As for a timing chain: You should not have to replace that with only 50k on it. Most people with vehicle never replace them or replace them when it goes out(as you cannot check them) It also is a rather pricey job to preform.
Smoke in your exhaust could also be a bad ring seal on your pistons.

I know the timing belt is usually over 70k but if Rich is anything like me, mileage piles up FAST. He's a musician so he probably travels a lot.
Thanks for the tip about the pistons. The guy who will be overseeing the whole job is a guy I trust so I'm sure he knew that too. I already called him and the 1st thing he said was Subaru's are known for head gaskets so he seemed pretty sure about that. But if my fluids never mix I guess that would point to something else like the ring seals. I'm just gonna keep an eye on it, nothing too wrong just yet.

On my 96 Ford Bronco I check weekly just because that is my baby. I check tire pressure every month, and do all my own maintenance. In almost 13 years that truck only has 85k on it and has had no major issues.
On my 96 Ranger, well it is sitting right now due to a bad throw out bearing. But, that will be replaced soon.

oddly enough you do not change your oil becuase it is low. But if your oil is leaking out every 3k you should find that.
most conventional oils nowdays could last as long as 3.5 to 4k now.
Much more so if you run synthetic.

have yet to find where it is leaking... it's not burning, we tested that... and I am already on a 5W30 and an additive to seal it and make it last longer... which helps, but still does not get to 3k on most months

With synthetic, a clean air filter, and in city driving you can stretch it to 6k without a problem. I do not recommend that though because there are other factors that can change that figure.

Very true.
On the Bronco I now use Valvoline for over 75k that is a semi-synthetic. It uses half traditional oil and half synthetic but had additives that helps with seals, gaskets, etc. My brother started with Valvoline way back when so I have a high regard for them. I also use a Fram Tough Guard oil filter which more dense than a traditional filter adding a layer of protection since I also off road.

brake fluid doesnt need to be changed
Break fluid should be periodically changed. I don't do it religiously myself but the reasons "they" say it should be are cut and pasted below...
According to some studies that have been done, brake fluid typically absorbs about one percent or more moisture per year of service life. Many two-year-old vehicles have as much as two to three percent water in the brake fluid. Imagine how much water must be in some vehicles that are six, eight or 10 years old and have never had the fluid changed.
As the fluid becomes contaminated with moisture, its boiling temperature drops. Only one percent moisture can lower the boiling point of some DOT 3 fluids down to 369° F. Two percent water can push the boiling point down to 320° F, and three percent can drag it all the way down to 293° F - which is getting dangerously close to the minimum DOT requirements.
If you have water accumulated in the calipers, it flashes into steam, which compresses very easily and the brake pedal will collapse to the floor. Total brake failure at the worst possible time. Uncontaminated brake fluid has a very high boiling point so it remains a liquid under extreme conditions and the brake system continues to apply pressure to the caliper pistons.

oh balls. your braking system should be completely sealed anyway. where is this moisture coming from.
Also you are supposed to bleed your brakes when ever you do work on them. Thus more than likely removing the aforementioned "moisture"
That would be like getting moisture in your oil.
I need an oil change pads and rotors. I just buy the parts and have a friend who knows what he's doing do the brakes. I'll pay for an oil change

Humidity in the air can be drawn into the fluid anytime the fluid reservoir is opened for inspection or anytime a brake hose, line or bleeder valve is opened when servicing the brakes. Even if the fluid reservoir is never opened, moisture will still infiltrate the system through microscopic pores in rubber brake hose. The rate at which this happens depends on the age of the vehicle and the type of brake hose used. Newer hose made with linings that are less permeable to moisture help extend the life of the fluid. Even so, moisture can still slip past piston seals in wheel cylinders and calipers.
Also the heating and cooling of the fluid from the heat of breaking breaks down the anti corrosion components of the fluid which could lead to premature wear of parts. Such as ABS modulators. Like I said I don't do it often, but it's just not true that it doesn't need to be done.

well if it needs to be filter it should be changed. Its a reason its filtered.

hey mr. car genius... I have a question.
My car has ongoing issues but I always bring it to the same garage which so far has been good to me, fair prices and they know I am not made of money so they dont do unnecessary repairs.
Anyway, I brought my car for a balancing and rotation to walmart of all places cause the garage's balancing machine was broken. Walmart told me they could not balance it cause the back tires were rippled, suggesting I needed new shocks or suspension.
I went back to the garage to have them look into it and they said they see nothing wrong with it and the ripple/ waves were not that bad and to have it balanced at another local repair shop. I did that in hopes and suggestion that the tires would even themselves out again.
All said and done the car was driving fine for a month but now I feel the same vibration again when driving and a somewhat louder noise from the back as well.
Do you think it is indeed the shocks?

im no genius. But is the ripple on the sidewall or is it on the tread?
Walmart is alright for tire stuff. i use them all the time.
Certain ripples on the sidewall will be a problem. some are nothing to worry about and are from inflating tires. The one is called undulation i believe.
depending on where the ripples are it would depend on what you need.
does the noise sound like its tire/road noise?

yeah the noise, I can't really determine what it exactly is, I tend to listen to the car's sounds a lot since I had all the water pump issues 2 years ago... so I do notice differences but can't make out where they exactly come from

the ripple is on the tread. When you go over the tire with your hand you can feel the waviness.

Car noises are very annoying. A lot of times you can never figure out what it is and your driving in fear.
And i always drive with no music on my work car.
check this: easy to do at home tests.

A ripple in the tread due to wear would be a rear suspension problem that means that you need, at a minimum, new rear shocks. In that case, I would fix the suspension and put the tire back on the rear to get some more wear out of the tire before replacing it.

check this site for your wheel bearing. Then take that to the mechanic.:
http://www.Rockauto.com
FYI: ive done two wheel bearing in the past month or so. It about a 45-1hour job. and my parts costs for each was 85 dollars a piece.
So just take whatever your guys labor charge is and add that into the 90 or whatever your bearing cost.

I use synthetic engine and tranny fluids with additives like Tufoil. I change tranny fluid ever 10 to 20K and oil every 3K. I do it myself for the oil, but tranny I bring to a mechanic. They tell me its not needed but they don't know what I know. I check the fluids every month and never have to add. My first Camry lasted 400,000 miles at least when. I sold it to a negro, and its still driving around.
My people checked the fluids on Friday. I can't be bothered with such details.
