What did/do you call them? Did you catch them? And, most importantly, where the fuck have they gone? How the fuck did they even work?
I call them lightning bugs. I would try to cup them in my hand and them press my cupped hands against my face.
I remember certain nights during a wiffle ball game, a contest of who could hit the most lightning bugs would break out. In hindsight, I was helping to kill off these beautiful creatures. Early sign of a serial killer too. Oh well....

Every June there is a week or two when you can witness a spectacular firefly display in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Photinus carolinus is a very special insect, commonly referred to as a synchronous firefly. Each individual blinks five times in succession followed by a pause. What's remarkable is that large clusters of these insects will synchronize their display and all blink and pause at the same time.
These fireflies display later than typical fireflies (they start at 9:45PM or later) and so photography is extremely difficult. This is a two-minute exposure at ISO 1600 and at f/1.8. The woods were literary flashing with light in an unrivaled display...absolutely breathtaking and something I'll never forget.

I was never really into killing them, but I wasn't present once when a guy was paid five dollars to smear them on his teeth.
We call them lightning bugs.

See? Every story involves killing them. That's why I haven't seen one in years.

I have dozens in my backyard.
I can mail some to you. I'll just put some grass in a coffee can, pop some holes in the lid, and they'll think they're at home.

I don't think they are dying off, I think we are slowly relocating them to a plush resort in Alaska. At least that's what I would like to see happen..
But wait.. if we did that, I would no longer be able to pull a McGuyver and make a flashlight out of 100 agitated lightning bugs and an empty 2 liter bottle. Then there would be no way for me to see which wire is actually the blue one.
I hate all of these moral conundrums that life tosses our way..

I would lay on my back on my Grandma's driveway in Waynesville NC, and try to shoot them with an air rifle. In retrospect, maybe not the brightest idea.

I still have both of my eyes.
Outside of that the practice would probably be considered a failure.

Some neighborhood buddies and I tried a couple of times to shoot fruit bats with a pellet gun. We never managed to hit one, they would always swoop out of the way the instant the trigger was pulled. Its like they could hear it coming or something..
Since they are spawn of satan, maybe they had some kind of natural ability to sense evil events. Like some kind of crazy Spidey sense..

I can vouch for that, my great grandpa was working at the inn that night. Said something about three wise asses holding Hersey's chocolate, a Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey (gets cold out there in the winter and there wasn't sufficient heat at the inn, cheap bastards at the inn insisted on doing things the old fashioned way by vehemently opposing use of space heaters) to and a forged hammer. Gramps never did understand what a baby would need with a hammer, some chocolate and some toilet paper..

we had them all over Germany growing up and directly translated they would be called Glowing Worms...
but I go with lightening bugs, and in PA I have them outside my house every summer... I might catch some with Lukas this summer as it will be the first year he is into bugs

Lightning bugs, they show up here mid summer. When the kids are catching them, it seems I always end up joining in.

I use both terms interchangeably depending on who I'm with at the time.
Or I just think of a song in Japanese that I learned with my h.s. women's ensemble Hotaru Koi ... which was translated as "Ho, Firefly" (probably because firefly goes better with the rhythm...)
(If you Google "hotaru koi + SSA" there's a place you can view the 1st page of the arrangement we used.)

I was just thinking the other day I haven't seen a lightning bug since I was a kid and I really miss them.
No I never killed one hammer but it looks like I was an exception but we would catch them in our hands to watch and then let them go. They bring back very pleasant childhood memories.

As a little kid I used to rip off the light part and stick it to my finger and pretend I was E.T.

As a kid I called them Lightning Bugs and used to spend hours catching and releasing them. I tend to use both names now, probably because my in-laws use the term Firefly.
I am looking forward to taking my daughter and nephew out to catch lightning bugs this summer. I hope there are a lot of them this year.

Fireflys and I have not seen one in years.
Lightning bugs.
And swatting them with a whiffle ball bat was a great training tool for hand-eye coordination and developing a quick bat.
By the end of the night the bat looked like a glow stick.

If you want to know how to drive a woman wild, get a mason jar, catch 15-30 lightening bugs in it, and put the open end of the jar up against her nipple. WILD the women go WILD.
Lightning bugs. I can't imagine the shame of referring to them as "fireflies" like some kinda rube! Oh my stars!

You probably cleaned them off the bat with the same bare hands that you changed oil with that day.
Filthy animal.

There is something romantic about catching insects for a lady. Sometimes it causes her to lick another females vagina in front of you and then share. It is all about romancing the ladies.

Lightning bugs, there are always a ton in late spring early summer back behind my parents house. In the summer home from school my friends and I would drink beer and walk around in the area when they where they all hatched or whatever they do to live. pretty impressive sight though.
