View Full Version : Pick A NEW Team
Let's say the unthinkable happens - your favorite pro sports teams fold. They don't relocate, they simply go out of business and vanish forever.
You're forced to pick entirely new teams to root for.
Who would they be?
In hockey I'm a Detroit Red Wings fanatic. If they folded, I think I'd be a New York Islander fan. I grew up watching that Stanley Cup dynasty team and I've always had a soft spot for them.
In baseball, I'm a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan. If they were to vanish I'd be a Detroit Tigers fan. They same guy who owns the Red Wings owns the Tigers, and Sparky Anderson won a World Series there too.

I couldn't root for any other team unless they had set the precedence for performing well and then making the entire city ashamed of their performance.

Good topic Gvac. This is what it must be like for young kids today anyway. With information so available and the ability to see any game from around the country, you could follow a team across the country almost as easily as a local one.
I don't know how it happened for anyone born 30 years ago but whatever.
If the Mets collapsed (as an organization, not in September), I would pick the Kansas City Royals.
I'd probably go with the Nats.

I've been a lifelong New York Islanders fan. My uncle took me to games back in the early 80s and I got hooked. I was even a season ticket holder for many years until I moved up into the woods. With the rumors swirling for a while now about a move, I've prepared myself for this situation. I'd become a Calgary Flames fan. I've always been from the school that the NHL needs more support for the Canadian teams. I hate the Leafs, and I couldn't root for Montreal. Besides, Iginla is a class act and Phaneuf is a monster. Going to Calgary would be a great road trip, too.
When I was a kid, I really like the Atlanta Flames jersey. I think Calgary's 3rd jersey is pretty bad ass.

However, if Hartford was still around, I would certainly be following them.

I'm a Mariner fan but if they folded I would go with Toronto Blue Jays. They were expansion teams on the same year and I have always liked them.
For hockey, I am a Habs fan but if they folded I would go with the Canucks since they are the closest NHL team to where I grew up.

Like Mojo, I'd just stop watching sports altogether. I'm halfway there now, because it just takes too damn long to watch anything these days. Baseball takes forever, and I can't watch a football game unless I've Tivo'ed it.
Too many damn commercials. Touchdown, extra point, commercial, kickoff, commercial.

This happened to me and my Browns in '95.
And don't even fucking try to say that they just "relocated".
MY team was gone. It's not like I was going to follow them and suddenly become a fucking Ravens fan.
I grew up in Illinois, so it was a somewhat easy transition for my back-up Bears to step in and become the number one, but it was still painful.
And once Cleveland got another expansion team that had the same name and wore the same uniforms, I tried to get that old love back, but it wasn't the same. And now I find myself conflicted between this new team and the Bears even now.

When I was a kid, my second favorite team was always the Boston Bruins (then in the 90's it became the Whalers). Nothing against Montreal (wonderful city) or the Les Habitants, just the rivalry still lives in me, I guess.

I don't know if I could love another.
If the Giants shut down (or moved to Tampa) I might stop watching baseball all together.
If this was a Nazi's were holding my family hostage situation I might pick the Tigers.
but then again...can I really trust the Nazi's would release them after I picked a team? I think not.

I already have season tickets for the Texans, so that's an easy one.
I suppose I could become a Rockets fan, since there's no real rivalry with the Bulls.
Baseball would be tough. There's no way I could be an Astros fan. I may have to give up baseball. At least I'd save money since I wouldn't need EI anymore.

I grew up in Philly and have been a lifelong Phillies fan. but there is room in my heart for other teams. the 3 years I lived in ny, I rooted for the yankees just because they were the local team that did not compete against the phillies (this was before interleague play.) I could never root for the mets.
if the phillies folded, I doubt I would go back to the yankees though. I might root for the A's, since they used to be in Philly. I try to follow them now, but since they're on the west coast it's not easy to stay up for their late games.
I love the city of Chicago, so I might also go for the White sox.
or I might just put my loyalties up on ebay and sell to the highest bidder.

Ugh, that is like saying there is no more food, I'm going to eat this dog poop instead.
Anyhow, for Hockey I would follow either the Dallas Stars or the Vancouver Canucks, maybe even the Blackhawks. If I had to choose a team in the East: Boston Bruins.
For Football: I'd start following the Bills or the Packers.

I would not want to live in a world without the Boston Red Sox.
We've been through too much together.

It would be rough to pick a new baseball team, I think I would rather pick a player I like and follow him around. I've started watching Pens games out here, but I never had a hockey alliance so I will follow the team in the city I work in.

Yankees? I go with the Twins. The most whitest, blond and blue eyed chicks in the stands, and I could bump bellies with Harmon Killebrew.
Jets? I'll go straight to the CFL, it'll be an improvement.
Rangers? Man, I hate the local teams with a passion. Maybe I'll build a time machine and check out the NY Raiders.(google that team, kids!)
Knicks? Nets all the way. Was a huge ABA fan and caught a bunch of games in the 70's. Where have you gone Ollie Taylor???

In all honesty, It would be tough for me to pick new teams. Right now, I like the Jets, Mets and Islanders. I dont care much for Basketball and though I do watch MLS, I dont have a team.
I would still watch baseball, since its my passion, but I would have no team really. Maybe the Red Sox since I liked them when I was younger. But I also at the time liked the White Sox too. Football I wouldn't care about. Hockey........prob the same as football. Basketball, id be a Nets fan. MLS id wait for the 2nd New York team since that is inevitable. Id also watch more european soccer.

I am currently an all-Atlanta sports fan. If any team folded, I would just adopt the corresponding Philadelphia team to support PA. And no, Pittsburgh doesn't count as part of PA.

I am a Sacramento Kings fan and they can't seem to get a new arena so I may be having to pick a new team to follow. I'd probably go with the Blazers because they are a young on the rise team with a rabid fanbase.

I'd probably drop the NFL altogether. Between 1984 when the Colts left Baltimore and 1995 when the Panthers began playing, I rarely watched pro football.
Baseball - I hate to admit it, but probably the Rays. As an Orioles fan, I love to hate the Yankees and Red Sox, plus their AAA team is local. The Cubs would be a possibility, mostly because I like Chicago in the summer.
hockey - I was a Caps fan before the Canes moved down here, so I'd probably revert back. Eww, I need to shower.
Basketball - Since the Hornets left Charlotte, I have learned to just enjoy the game. No need for a favorite team. I could probably say that about hockey also.

I've been a SF/Bay Area sports fan for my entire life, so it's all about rooting for the Giants/49ers/Warriors, however, I actually have back-up teams that I respect and wish well, but don't root for. If my teams folded, I'd have to go with the Cubs/Texans/Bulls.
Yeah, the Texans.
