shit no, 20th century Man...

the Kinks would have been one of the biggest bands in the world if they hadn't been banned from visiting the US.

If that's the case, I'll take Village Green Preservation Society, although I would probably lean towards Waterloo Sunset otherwise.

This thread really does show what an awesome band the Kinks are.

Why are you throwing out the dumb TCFTR line? Yes, you have the earliest track, but as I said the majority of our choices are in the first 3 - 4 years. Waterloo Sunset was IN '67, not post-67. Many of the others were in '66 or '67. In a forty year career, four years still is pretty early. These days, four years would mean their second, maybe third albums.

Can we agree that the Kinks rule?

Apeman for me,

Tough choice though since the Kinks have so much great stuff.

Not only my favorite Kinks song, but probably my favorite song of all time.

Second would be Holiday in Waikiki. A really cleverly written song about American consumerism. An early expose of rube vs. carnie from the rube's point of view.

Yeah, I usually spend a night a week doing that. I guess I didn't realize how many Kinks fans there were out there...maybe it's an easy coast thing. I'm in Portland and not too many people can name more than five songs.

I am only a Kinks fan because of Ron and Fez and Fat Opie. I had never given two shits about Ray's music until I heard AotT play Kink Kong at a RnF party. I went home that night and searched and searched until I figured out what band it was. I now own the entire discography. THANKS HUGH!

Is it true the Kinks were banned from the US? Why? I never heard this before.

From wikipedia:

Following the summer 1965 American tour, the American Federation of Musicians refused permits for the group to appear in concerts in America for the next four years, cutting the Kinks off from the main market for rock music at the height of the British Invasion. [6] Although neither the Kinks nor the union gave a specific reason for the ban, at the time it was widely attributed to their rowdy on-stage behaviour. [7]

Punks before their time eh? I guess "you really got me" would attest to that.

Lola.... because I saw them in 1984 (2nd row right in front of Dave) and they turned up the lights and we all sang along (bout 6,000 people) and it was about my second concert ever. So even though it is their 'big hit' it is still my fav.

I had a similar story. It was 1979; I was 17 and on my first big out-of-town concert trip. We had seats in the upper section but about two songs in this hot woman that had traveled with us asked me to come with her. I had no idea where we were going but we ended up right in front of Dave. Ray was also constantly in front of us, and during "Low Budget" he stuck the mic right in my face after one of his "what did you say"? During Dave's solo on "You Really Got Me", he shoved his guitar right in front of me and I got one quick strum before he went down the line to allow others to do the same. What a thrill.

Ray Davies on the Ron and Fez show was like the ultimate collision of awesome things. Now if Ronnie could somehow get Dave to dig up and re-animate Jerry Garcia for an hour long interview I could probably stop listening.

Anyway, Ray Davies is touring this month. Im going to the Welmont show. Plenty of tix left. Highly recommend seeing him.
