I made this Chicago style beef over the weekend, and it was pretty rockin'...

If you've been to Chicago, you can get sandwiches like these from Portillos, or even in the grocery stores to make at home. I spent a few weeks training in Shaumburg, and really fell in love with these sandwiches.

Tell me if you try making them...

Yup, toss that shiz back in the gravy, heat slowly up to temp, and throw into a bun. I made double the gravy as suggested by one of the reviewers, and I am glad I did. I also buttered and toasted my roll...family loved it too.

Make it openfaced, spread a little shredded mozz over the top and finish it in the broiler.

You're welcome.

Why would you ever...EVER...ever grill meat prepared like that?

Common sense.

totally disagree. if you're allowing ritalin to broil, grilling should be ok.

and anything has to be better than basically boiling it in sauce like others have suggested. your city sucks for food. boiled meat? just move to england.

You don't boil it you just bring to temp and serve

You're not fucking boiling the meat. Stop being dense. You're usually either sauteeing it, roasting it or broiling it so that it ends up being juicy. You're not going to get that by grilling meat like that, it'll just dry out. The point of this sandwich is for it to be dripping with flavor, not dried out slabs of grilled meat.

Portillos is awesome! They also make fantastic burgers. My folks love that place.

Just roast the damn thing, slice that bitch thin, throw it in the gravy, and bring that shiz up to temp...it's not rocket science!

How did the bizarre cooking methods catch on in Chicago? What ethnic group started the trend for this method? Just curious. The Chicago style BBQ and pizza and hot dogs and sausages are examples. Its just strange to a New Yorker. I am sure it is fine and tasty and I mean no offence, but am seriously curious how it started. Is it German, Polish or what?

well, by the title of this thread, i'm guessing this sandwich was started by some people of slovakian background.

Italians, Irish and Eastern Europeans, mostly. A lot of it was just "homegrown" as the city's population exploded with people from all over the country.

i am gonna make this, but alter it to my schedule and wallet by cooking it in a crock pot so it gets nice and tender. Can use a cheaper cut of meat too. It wont be the same, but i think it'll be good.

I used a chuck roast because it was on sale for $1•78 a pound, even though the recipe said not to. The key is to find the grain of the meat and slice against it. On. My roast had to be cut in half and then sliced....still damn good though

That looks great weav, thanks for posting the recipe! I have had meat prepared this way in a deli but never thought about making it. Looks easy enough, think I will try it in a dutch oven with fresh garlic though.

Tubbys photo sealed the deal:tongue:
