Just download the livecd. You can boot off of it and run Back Track without the need to make any changes to your current machine.

If you're looking for a Desktop replacement. Meh. You'll be back to Windows in a day.
If you need it for serious reasons like networking that only Linux can do best, it has it's place in that market. Good luck getting help though from any linux based forum. A simple question like "I have a Soundblaster Audigy and can't get my sound to work" will result in a term paper style reply that involves a array of shit like opening files in terminal and editing some oddball file on line 3424 by replacing strings of text, downloading shit, recompiling, cooking a steak, and changing a diaper. Also, it'll be written in a native linux nerd language that you will never be able to translate. That is if you even get a reply other then "newb" or a DEA style investigation of every spec of your system.

It's a pain in the ass to get any linux distro set up to the way you like, but i've heard it's pretty nice once you get it all set up.
I'd do a dual boot of linux and windows so that you can mess around in linux, but still be able to get other stuff done in windows.

Ditto. I really like Ubuntu and it is a lil strange at first, takes some getting use to, but if you are a Windows mega-user like me you will grow to apreciate Linux. Styckx and I have the same sound card and mine was detected during instalation.
Things I like better about Linux than Windows:
-Simple networking utilities to control and administer your home networking
-Vast array of open source software available, moreso than Windows
-CD/DVD burning a snap
-Security (I do many of my ****** downloads from there, hint hint
-Piques my curiousity
