I'm renting a room in a house with a bunch of other guys and in order to save money we're canceling cable for the summer. That means no CNN, no ESPN, no Comedy Central, no nothing all summer long. I think it'll give me a chance to get some use out of the hundred and hundred of dollars I've invested in DVDs that I've watched once. Plus I have a hard drive full of stuff that I need to watch as well, and maybe its time to explore XM radio beyond channel 202 and channel 54. How long have you gone without television, did you miss it, what made you go back?

A Summer of No TV

awesome dude. I've found that I'm actually going to bed earlier because I'm not staying up watching awful informercials. A TV in a bedroom is nice, but I don't know how healthy it is. The TV just shouts at you all the time. News, commercial, reality shows, its all just noise. I'm happy to let Larry David and Andy Millman into my bedroom, Nancy Grace and Billy Mays not so much.

I got cable again in the fall, because of football, but I find myself having the thing turned off most of the time now, especially in the living room.

admittedly, I do watch in my bedroom to help me fall asleep

good luck

i haven't had cable in close to two years. it's probably the best decision i have ever made. it gets you to do other things. ive increased my reading 10 fold because of it. i also spend quality time with my girlfriend and have good conversations instead of just sitting on the couch and watching tv which a lot of couples seem to do.

good luck.

I only watch the Phillies games on tv. I don't watch anything online. During the off season I have no issues going without tv.

So if you go to a bar and there's a t.v. there, do you stay and watch or do you leave to find a bar with no t.v.?

TV is so gay. Just leave it, never look back. You can find the few things worth watching online or in boxsets, so fuck TV.

Oh believe me, if these NBA finals get good, I will have to get to a bar to watch them. I'm just talking about no TV in my house, no just turning it on and then prying myself out of the hypnotic trance 5 hours later after I've watched the Sportscenter loop 3 times, half of an I love lucy, and a couple hours of flipping between Ronco knife and Extenze infomercials.

You're not gonna watch basketball? Fuck at least listen to the games on the radio. How much money are you guys saving? A hundred dollars divided between how many people over 3 months? Just get the tv turned back on.

No, I am going to watch basketball. That's what I said in my post.

I am trying to talk Rhino into canceling the dish network for the summer. We rarely have time to watch it. It would save us quite a bit of money for the summer.

I could totally dump my TV at this point. Now that Lost is off for the next nine months, there's nothing I really watch anyway. If it's on, it's just background noise.

The only thing that'd probably be tough is missing baseball, but honestly, I go to 25 games a year, and when I'm actually at home to watch, I actually find myself turning off the TV, grabbing my iPhone or XM, heading to the park and jogging while listening to the games on the radio.

So I could probably eliminate it.

Will I?....meh....maybe.

I neither have cable or satellite and rarely turn on my tv unless it is for the Wii or to watch a DVD. I do watch shit on the internet though, Hulu is my best friend and there are "other means" in which I watch movies.

games are much better on the radio anyway. youre not glued to the tv watching the batter call time out after every pitch. you can actually get stuff done while listening
