To keep immigration to this country better under control.

I recently read this article or saw it discussed a bit on TV.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29961711/

We frequently throw 10 lbs. of cure at a problem that may have taken 2 ounces of prentitive measure.

Reading this:

http://www.nationsencyclopedia.com/Asia-and-Oceania/Afghanistan-AGRICULTURE.html

It would seem that small moves toward irrigation, and farming technologies might finally start to solve our problems there.

The same thing, it would seem, might keep Mexicans in their country and so forth.

It would work here as well. Money spent on public education and after school programs cuts down on crime. But, why help the kids, when you can simply lock them up as adults.

Military is being privatized. Prisons are being privatized. Is the police force next?

so the conversation inevitably devolves.

the mic/guinea thing (or as I prefer western european immigrants) of 1900 was a completely different story. They came more as the engine to a rapidly expanding industrialized nation.

The waves of immigrants now come more as... well. I tend not to have to much positive to say but srsly... I think Serpico addressed the core of the issue well. Its got more to do with letting a problem happen and then figuring out the lesser of all evils w/ regard to fixing it and it has to fucking stop.

Hopefully GenXr's and beyond get this ... or maybe we're just all hopeless and dead. :wallbash:

Eco, I don't want to have an argument with you. Honestly, I'd agree with the idea of positively influencing nations so that their residents weren't forced to abandon their families in order to be able to sustain them. My issue is with the tone of your statement and the specific reference to keeping Mexicans out - which has become quite the rally cry as of late.

Furthermore, the immigration of the early 1900's was so similar in fact to the current wave, that immigration quota system was born of the racism stemming from the tide of southern europeans and Irish. These caucasians weren't as welcomed as the German immigrants had been because they were not protestant. The language issue is hysterical because the first ESL initiative in this country was from German immigrants in Pennsylvania.

Currently, the percentage of immigrants vs native born in this country is less than what it was then. (Something like 8-9% including so called "illegals" now vs around 12% then). In the last 10 years, immigrants have filled the void for laborers, landscapers, farmers, and many more tasks born of the housing boom and the natural progression of previous immigrant's children from manual labor to college educations and white collar positions.

Basically, I agree that it'd be awesome if as a nation, we assisted other nations and insisted in a living wage around the world, and feel that it would definately reduce immigration to the US. However, if that were to happen, we would have to pay $60 instead of $30 for Victoria's Secret bras made in the Dominican Republic. We want our shit cheap and we want to bitch about immigrants and we want to forget that all of us walked in their shoes.
