What makes a nerd a nerd?
It could be argued from multiple angles I think.
Of course, there is the classic definition of a kid with coke bottle glasses with the pocket protector and suspenders and plaid pants, but what about people who trick out their computers, or cell phones or cars, or who knows what else?
I work with this guy that has a million tattoos of the Simpsons all over him and customizes his VW Golf with computer chips to crank the engine and has a massive sound system and low riders suspension and micro walled tires. I see guys doing that with rice burners too.
Then there are the computer geeks, who make elaborate cases out of Legos and stuff, and customize there phones and stuff. Are they all different kinds of Nerds? Granted, the guys I se with the tricked out cars often have hot girls with them, but is an obsession with anything like that a defining characteristic of a Nerd?

Nerds are of varied flavors and varied colors, ranging from extremely sweet to extremely sour; often the two flavors in one box will contrast, and a single flavor may even exhibit both extremes. They are thickly glazed with carnauba wax, which gives them a hard bite, and a gloss. The nucleus of each candy is composed of one or more complete sucrose crystals. These optically clear monoclinic crystals are about 0.2–1 mm in length and help define the irregular shape.

zildjian nailed it!
nerds are the result of our society's intolerance for those who are different than ourselves.
just because a person doesn't excel in sports and enjoys wearing wizard robes while playing D&D, you and I slap labels on them
why can't we just except people for what they are and what they have to offer?

I hope no one thought I was being a dick making this thread. I consider myself to be a bit of a geek. My intention in fact was to illustrate that a nerds definition really can apply to everyone.
people mix these up constantly.
nerd = super smart, socially awkward.
geek = someone with a probably unhealthy knowledge/love of a certain subject.

I know I am a nerd in some ways (or maybe a geek?) [maybe a creep???] because I drive a scooter and spend a lot of time and money on my Blackberry Bold and my iMac and I have my Sony Vaio computer and I just got an iPod Touch and got a wireless router so I can go online from anywhere in my apartment. As a kid I was a huge Star Trek fan, I used to love sci-fi movies as a kid and watch Godzilla and shit. I was into comics and animi cartoons. So I am certainly not judging anyone.
I went by a Dunkin Donuts last night and there must have been 20 guys with their pimped out rice burners with the big exhausts, low riders and the bright yellow paint and stuff, tinted windows and loud systems. These were the young good looking guys with the spikey hair and fake tans. They had girls hanging out too, but it got me wondering is they were 'nerds' in their own way.

I hate nerds. I saw a couple of them yesterday at the mall and I pushed them into the water fall fountain. Everyone was laughing!
