Off fucking QVC?! Are you insane?! You don't come to me, the guy you KNOW knows how to help you find a deal online?!!!?!?!

They KNOW I just helped my grandma find the exact laptop she wanted and needed. We got her a 17" wide screen with a very clear display. My uncle, who decided to get my god-daughter a QVC laptop, was impressed with my grandmother's laptop.
I don't even wanna know what they got or how much they paid for it, I think it will drive me insane. I know they have to have paid in excess of $700 for it, I went to look at a few laptops on QVC's website. I know I could have saved them at least $200 bucks today with the daily E-mails I sign up for from Newegg, Tigerdirect and ecost. Sounds like they went one place, QVC, and picked one.

I don't know if the got her a netbook either. I'm not sure if the thought they were all similar, so they saw a lower price on netbooks, got her that and won't understand it has no onboard DVD drive so it's not a good primary computer for my god daughter who may need to load programs or school projects off a CD or DVD. I have no idea if they thought about HD storage. I have no idea if they thought getting a computer with a nice video card might be worth it so she could possibly game with it. I don't know if they basically got a web laptop that will be obsolete in 2 years.

Sorry, just wanted to vent. They got my number or at the very least, they could have reached me through my grandma. I would have helped them maximize their money. Done some homework on Dell, Toshiba, HP, Acer and Asus' website then moved to my many online sources and finally to brick and mortar stores.

OH well, it's on it's way. I wonder if they put it on FLEX PAY? Linger Longer.

I mean they just didn't think. They could have called me, given me some money limits and I would have had an answer that night for them.

Woot! just had a really nice refurbished HP with a decent NVIDIA card today for like $650. If they wanted new we would have worked with that too. I just deleted a "5 Laptops for under $800" E-mail today from Newegg or Ecost, I forget who because I'm not in the market for anything right now.

Point is, just ask. I know I'm not an expert on cars for instance. So when I have a question or need advice there is a guy I used to work with named Bob who was a mechanic for like 15 years and builds rock crawling trucks and shit on the side. Guy has a whole metal shop set up in his garage. HE is an expert, I got to him.

I'm just frustrated to hear my Aunt and Uncle didn't think to ask for my free help, I'd have dove right in to make sure they got the most for their money for my god daughter.

I also have a good suggestion for a warranty company, but they probably got some horrific one through QVC or worse yet, thought the year one included with most laptops is enough.

You can learn on these cheap guitars and they're not the worst idea in case it's a kids passing phase. But as ANC said, you can go to Guitar Center, especially around Christmas or other major holidays, and get a similarly priced product from a guitar company you know that will grow with the player. Of course when they get serious they will get a better instrument but you really have to price shit out.

Impulse buys are dangerous, ESPECIALLY ON MOTHERFUCKING QVC!!!!:wallbash::wallbash:

Thanks man, there's really not much to say other than me yelling. It's done and shipped, just found out it happened from my grandma in the car. I was appalled. I just hope they got her a decent laptop, 15" screen with a few bells and whistles that will make it worth something in 3 years.

But I'm scared. I'm even more scared I'm gonna see this fucking thing next year, infected with soda spilled on it.

Only good thing is my family doesn't hang out a lot. So not sure that's emotionally healthy, but it's good for avoiding free tech help.

Maybe I should blow up at someone and start a huge family fight again near the time the warranty runs out.

But seriously, I never minded helping people out with tech shit, I actually enjoy it to some sick extent, even the tedious stuff like reinstalling Windows and that kinda shit. That's what kills me, I would have viewed the hunt for a good laptop as a kind of challenge and felt a little fulfillment when we got her one she was happy with and we all knew it was a good price for the laptop.

But no, we got the QVC special on the way. ::shudder::

I remember when that douche bag first started pitching his classical guitar playing lessons, I always wondered how the hell he planned on teaching anyone to play guitar when more then likely the thing was out of tune upon delivery. Since it's near impossible to teach a novice how to tune a guitar by ear. Years went by when he started including an electronic tuner w/ his Jeff Jarrett guitar.

Problem is that Im not sure I would buy a 5th grader an expensive guitar until I know they are going to play very much, do they still rent instruments? I remember my parents rented me a tenor sax when I first started playing then bought one for like $800 that I played for years until I gave it to my younger cousin. I wish I would have kept it.

And the laptop would drive me crazy, they could have just used that shitty tronix they advertise on XM and gotten that crappy one, hell the wal mart guitar people should have told them about the laptops in there for $600. They arent that great but what does a kid really need?

I agree my god daughter just kinda needs a basic laptop, but that's what kills me. A basic laptop these days with at least 250 gigs of HD space, integrated graphics, DVD-RW drive, 15" screen and not much else can be found in the $400 to $500 range. Looking at QVC quickly, a lot of their laptops are well over $600 for stuff that isn't that great for that price. I just have a bad feeling they got ripped off and got her a laptop that can't grow with her needs at all and will be obsolete in like 2 years.

There is nothing I can do about it now except vent I guess.

They are, and mine is no more or less retarded than other families. I guess besides being frustrated that they didn't at least ask their family tech head for a little advice, I'm frustrated that they didn't even comparison shop. They went to one website, the end. When you're going to buy most things don't you do a little shopping around? Even something like a cheap car stereo, I would think you'd check the Sunday flyers in a paper or a few websites, no?

It's just being a bad shopper too. I love Newegg and end up buying from them a lot but I ALWAYS check them and Ecost and Tigerdiret and Amazon if it's something I can get from them all.

I mentioned that in my 1st couple posts. That is an amazing laptop for that price, recertified. It's very similar to the laptop I had built from HP about 2 years ago. You'll love it.

That's the kind of laptop that WON'T be obsolete in 2 years and it can do more than just basic computing and web crap.

Still very frustrated, I know they got corn holed for a shitty laptop.

Look at this beautiful thing 19" screen, fullsize keyboard it's so hard to find a good fullsize keyboard on laptops today. Let's start this thing up, it boots in about 30 seconds, it's amazingly fast. Now watch what im going to do now. we're downloading a movie, watching a nasa shuttle launch, on imdb, editing a photo, and watching a youtube video. This computer is an amazing multitasker, like I said it has Intel's patented CoreDuo technology, this is the newest and fastest processor on the market, you are not going to find another laptop in this price range as powerful as this machine. Now I close the lid look at this amazing silver finish, scratch resistant, I can hold this thing with one hand look at this, only five pounds, that's amazingly light for a laptop of this size. You got your DVD-RW right here, just pops out, that's for burning your home movies, backing up your system, burning cds of your favorite music. These right here are our four USB ports, these ports are so useful and so capable and we're giving you four of them. Now here's your 5-in-1 card reader, you put your memory stick from your digital camera, your camcorder in here, SD, produo, compact flash, this can read any card you might have. Right here we have our audio ports. These right here are amazingly capable, simulated 5.1 surround sound we've never sold a laptop on this channel with a sound system like this. you can watch all your favorite movies in the car, you dont even need a portable dvd player. this is your ethernet port, for wired internet, remember you are getting built in wireless capability with speeds up to 1 gigabit per second which is the fastest speed you can browse at. It comes with Internet Explorer 7, look at this, tabbed browsing, you can open up all your favorite webpages now watch, minimize them all in one click now we're watching KungFu panda. Just 3 minutes left to order, let's take a call, Grandma Moe, you're on the air

I usually shop around, but something like a laptop is an absolute NEED to shop around item. I can see if you're shopping for a pair of sneakers buying the first pair that fits and looks good without checking out all of the other shoe stores and online. If convenience means you spend an extra, say $25, big deal to most people. But I would wager to guess that your family isn't the kind that can spend in the extra hundreds of dollars for a product that could very well be inferior to one they could have gotten cheaper.

I own a Harmony 880 remote control. I love it so much that I decided to buy one for my parents for Christmas. Several months later my sister and her husband spend the week at my parents and my brother-in-law is using the remote and loves how easy it is to use. It was funny cause he would purposely try to do things wrong, only to have the remote correct itself.

As the following Christmas approached, I asked my mom if she was thinking about buying a remote for them since they liked it so much. My mom said no. Now as a kid, I once ruined my brother's Christmas by showing him where my parents hid the presents, so that reputation has stayed with me and I'm always reminded of that incident. So even though my mom told me no, she just chose not to tell me the truth.

Well one day I'm checking out RF.net and someone posted an Amazon link for that exact remote, brand new for $80. That was a great deal, so the next day I'm at my parents house and I tell my mom about the deal and she says she's not getting it.

Christmas Day comes and my sister and her husband call wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. My sister tells me that that they got the Harmony remote from my parents and that Joey (her husband) is charging it and can't wait to use it. She said he was really surprised that he got it.

I confront my mom and ask her when she bought them the remote and she shamefully said it was the day before I told her about the link and to top it all off, it was $10 more and refurbished. She then proceeded to tell me why she never told me and it went back to that incident of mine as a kid.

:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

If it makes you feel any better, the next time I need a laptop Im gonna ask you for help. That cool?

Yea, sure. Post a thread, all the tech heads on here will converge and find you a nice laptop within your budget.

Jesus, they won't let you live down something you did decades ago as a kid?

I'll keep an eye out online for a new family for ya, and will PM you a link.

Moe, got any leads yet? It just fucking happened to me again.

I call my mom yesterday asking if she could stop by this weekend and she tells me that her and my dad are on the interstate going away for the weekend. I ask where to and she says South Carolina, apparently it was a last minute thing and they just decided to break out the motor home and head up there.

I thought it was kind of odd since they don't know anyone in SC, but I didn't say anything, just told them to have fun.

This afternoon I read an update on my sister's Facebook, who lives in West Virginia, "can't believe my parents are here... what a nice surprise!"

Lied to again because of something I did when I was fucking 13.

Did you ever do it again? I mean if you have a history of letting the cat out of the bag that's one thing. If you did it as a child and they just won't let it die, I would get very serious about it.

The next time your parents call you have to tell them "stop treating me like an asshole for something I did as a child or don't call back until you're ready to treat me like an adult. Because I'm sick of you lying to me."

If this is something thatc comes up a lot and it's been pissing you off, you're gonna have to make a stand of sorts and stop it.
