Server memory question

We have some computer gurus on this board so here it goes:

My primary computer is essentially a server with higher end components like the vid card, etc.

I have to use ECC memory with this mother board (and the prior one before upgrade) and I know how it all works.

But, why can I not buy memory (DDR 2 667) with lower latencies? I even try to tweak it through BIOS with no luck and many crashes and buzzers. It's not bad but not great though, with 4 (2x2) gig per processor I get a CAS of 5-5-13-19.

Mainly just a curiosity question that I really can't find an answer online.

Is it all new ram or are you trying to match it with older ram?

RAM was replaced with the MB this past November even though the previous RAM was compatible (same MB manufacturer). The processors are 2nd gen dual core Opterons, and the MB is an Asus L1N64-SLI WS/B.
