Yikes.
Directed by Guy Ritchie - who seemed to have put a Pirates Of The Caribbean spin on the story.
Then again, the trailer doesn't really say what the movie is about, does it?

isn't this the version where they basically strongly imply that they (holmes & watson) were lovers? boo.
i love reading sherlock holmes. i'll never watch this.

Wow that was bad.
And not good bad either.
What was with the super super slow mo shit? Maybe it was just a poorly done trailer.

I think it looks like a somewhat interesting take on the character. Holmes has always been portrayed as a gentleman and scholar; this trailer makes it look more like Holmes is a brilliant eccentric.
I'll probably catch it since I am a fan of Robert Downey Jr. Although maybe not in a first run theater...

It looks too wacky, it looks like Iron Man. That's a really really interesting time in literature and culture, I hope they draw on that.

And the new trailer they just showed on FOX didn't tell anything either. Looks like a big mess.

Im a huge sherlock fan, I've read every one of the adventures...even the ones after final bow, but im totally conflicted about the movie. Holmes and Watson were never lovers.
Its wild to me that the "serious" movie takes that angle. It would be one thing if the will ferrell and sasha cohen movie made them gay, but I was really hoping that the downey movie would just adapt one of the old ac doyle stories.

I seem to be the only one in the thread who think it looks good.
I'm not a fan of period pieces but this looks like it mixes in some modern type of action ( some sort of tazer cane ).
I do agree that Jude Law looks a bit fruity but isn't he fruity in everything ?

Look, I have to go see it.
I don't want to.
They took Robert Downey Jr, put him in a frock coat, and added a bulldog?
That's like catnip for all my addictions.

I see commercials and previews for this a lot and yet still have NO IDEA what the movie is about. Not even a hint as to what the plot entails. It's just a lot of shots of quirkiness, exploding 19th century hardware and people yelling "Holmes!"

I saw the " Making Of " on HBO the other night while waiting for The Office to come on.
From what I gathered it seems like some villain who practices the occult gets executed but somehow comes back and is trying to take over the world.
He's apparently as bright as Holmes but much more " devious " or so the chick from Wedding Crashers says in one scene.
I'm not sure how they tie it to the original stories.
It's possible the bad guy is Morriarity but I can't confirm that.

That would be good information to put in the trailers. I wondered if it would be Morriarity, but I can't even tell who is the bad guy from the ads.

The actor that plays the bad guy is the guy that was in " RocknRolla ".
Ah he was also in " Body Of Lies ".

I caught it this weekend. It really wasn't too bad. Robert Downey Jr. was great as always & Jude Law is just as plain as always. I liked it & didn't mind the weird Guy Ritchie tricks. It was pretty dark & MisterSmith is correct that they make Holmes very eccentric.

That pretty much is the plot. The story is like a good introduction to Holmes & it was very obvious that there would be a sequel in which they will fully introduce Morriarity.

I didnt get a chance to go over the weekend...did it have anything to do with any of the Arthur Conan Doyle stories, or was it just running around and blowing up stuff with characters named Holmes and Watson?

as far as i know it had nothing to do with those stories
and for me it seemed like that they had watson almost on the same level if not above holmes and i always thought of it as holmes was far superior to watson
here they have it as watson is the main guy and holmes is just drunk weirdo who has some intelligence

Ugh PASS:thumbdown:
Watson certainly was not the bumbling idiot that some of the earlier movies made him out to be, and the stories were always from his pov, but he was never the brilliant man behind the man...if thats what they're protraying him to be.
Jesus, I just have to suck it up and see this thing to have an opinion, im starting to sound like Fez.

I actually think the Watson part of the movie was more realistic.Watson ,in the books, WAS a doctor, who fought in a war. The Watson in the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies was a bit of a bumbling fool and you never saw what Holmes would like about him. When you stand back and look at the movie, it actually looks like a late 1800s version of HOUSE,& Watson is the Wilson to Holmes's House .

It was just ok. Should have been funnier, think it took itself too seriously at some parts. Like it had a foot in each genre. Either be silly or serious, it kinda felt like it couldn't fully decide.
Still, not bad.

What a horrible movie. Arthur Conan Doyle is turning in his grave.
The payoff was so contrived and illogical, the stylized action was annoying. It works in modern day cockney London, but it doesn't work for 19th century detective fiction.
Irene Adler wasn't the "perfect woman" of Holmes' dreams but an annoying bitch. Watson was a pussy. Lestrade was some puppy dog side-kick.
And can someone explain to me why you have to invent some new villain when the greatest villain of all time is already written and in the books - Moriarty.

Way to action-y for a good Sherlock Holmes movie. It's not bad, it just doesn't have to have a Sherlock Holmes brand, because the characters aren't really Sherlock and Watson, This movie is essentially Guy Ritchie doing something in late 19th century cockney London, as opposed to late 20th century cockney London.
