View Full Version : Which dog breeds would survive if humans suddenly dissapeared?

I was waiting at a red light this afternoon and a family very slowly crossed the street in front of me. The reason for the holdup, their wienerdog was doing it's best to keep up with its grotesquely disproportional deformed midget legs.
We love fat, skinny and freakish breeds in our pets but if humans were bred in a wienerdog fashion they'd be bed ridden and a burden on society. Seeing that dog struggle to walk got me thinking that that dog, although cute, is basically on life support from his owner. He'd be dead in 2 weeks on his own.
What dogs would be most adaptable if CNN's H1N1 wiped us all out tommorrow?
I think German Sheppards would reign, they're smart, strong and independent.
Pit bulls would be the obvious choice but they're not smart, they'd preoccupy themselves with fighting other dogs and starve in the meantime.
I bet Retrievers/Labs would fare well, smart and mean/strong when they need to.
There'd be mass graves of shitsu's and various other purse/grandmother dogs.
Husky's are close enough to wolves they'd challenge the Sheppards. They'd probably do well.
Any others?

All dogs would become mutts.

I think a boxer would also do well. Smart, strong, not to big that it would have to eat a ton.

Obviously but I'm talkin initial wave, before they breed. Most breeds wouldn't make it.
Which purebred dogs would survive.

true, great danes would have trouble. They'd never get enough food. All the big breeds would starve, St Bernards, Newfoundlanders etc...

It would have to be a tough medium sized dog for sure. A lot of terrier breeds would do well.

mastiffs, german shepherds, rottweilers, and pit bulls would cross breed to a hybrid that would rule everything but the big cats.
German shepherds would be murdered by pitt bulls and mastiffs, but together they would thrive.

i think some of the small dogs
would do very well
yorkies could live in little holes
and eat mice and insects
they are rodent-size dogs
and could thrive as rodents
dachsunds would become
water-based creatures
and slither around like eels
and live on fish

Shepherd breeds, the Sled dog Working breeds, and the hunting breeds.
There is a really close to wolf breed from one of the old ussr block that you wouldn't be able to tell if you didn't know.

Huskies would do very well especially if there were enough to form packs
Sheppards
Retrivers would probably do pretty well too.

The Pitbulls are smart, the humans who fight them.. eh.. not so much.
That said, I'm going with Rottweilers.

I think my dog Vicky (coonhound/australian shepherd) would do all the killing and take the night's dinner back to my dog Norman (black lab/australian cattle dog) who would be more like the mommy

well first off, the dogs would naturally go into packs. My vision is that all different types of dogs would go together and would each use their unique strength to help the pack and compensate for the weak traits in certain breeds. Almost like a doggie X-Men. Isn't that adorable?

nah, retrievers are far too human-dependent. i honestly don't think they'd last very long. they might get depressed and commit mass suicides.
i always heard that the breeds that most closely resemble wolves would do best, not only based on their own instinctual ability, but because other animals would recognize and respect them as wolves...or some shit.
did anyone see the PBS special (it might have been Nova) on the evolution of dogs? it was fascinating.

all the toy breeds are gonna die. they are WAY too human dependant. the larger dogs like german shepherds and the like will do ok.

Dobermans, and any tiny dogs that can hide beneath furnaces and inside cat scratching posts.

English bulldogs would have a ton of trouble. I tried to take mine camping once and it was the worst, all the stuff in the woods just hit her in the face over and over and she gets hives from insect bites and other distress. Any purebreed that has severe allergic reactions like that would die off in a year.
Basset hounds would be screwed... Not sure about beagles.
I think greyhounds and whippets would fare well because they're fast and lean.
German shepherd, Australian shepherd, no problem.
What about larger types of poodle?

I will put all my money on any Japanese dog breed. Shibu Inu, Akita, especially the Kai Inu.

I've never seen one walk without it's nose in the air. I don't know how they genetically breed snobbishness, it's not hereditary, no matter how young you get them they still got it.
Roaming packs of wolves might take the females into their packs as a nice piece of tail but the males are done for.
