View Full Version : Do non-recycling areas freak you out when you're there?

I get this all the time. My area has been a recycling town for many years now. So when I go to an area that doesn't recycle, it REALLY freaks me out.
I mean I'm sure we can argue if recycling is actually worth it, the cost effectiveness of getting the stuff and actually processing it. Bottom line is I just feel better that all the plastic bottles I accumulate in a week go back to be recycled instead of going straight into a landfill.
It just feels so un-natural to put aluminum, plastic and glass in a garbage instead of a separate bin.
Anyone else get this?

Here we do not recycle as a city so I recycle by choice. There are very few communities around Houston that actually recycle and it irritates me.

It always bugged me when I was in college in PA that they didn't recycle cans. Every fraternity would have dumpsters filled with empty cans. Seemed like such a waste.

Yeah its really weird. I grew up in a very liberal, very "green" town. Out where I live now no one recycles and most people don't even redeem cans and bottles.

Back home in Nova Scotia they recycle everything. You pay a 10 cent levy on drink bottles and canned soft drink and beer and you can return them for a 5 cent refund. We even had green carts that you put your kitchen waste and anything green into and they picked them up for composting. When I moved here to Manitoba boy was I in for a shock...the only thing that you get money back for is beer bottles and cans and cheap sherry bottles that all the rummies drink, nothing else. They do recycle here but it is nowhere near what we did back home.
I now live in a provincial park and we don't have garbage pick-up. We take it to our dump ourselves, the good thing is they do recycle so I feel much better then when I first moved here and threw everything into the garbage.

Because it's a waste of time. This Earth existed on it's own billions
of years before man even existed. The Earth will continue to survive
on it's own billions of years after man is extinct whether you recycle or not.

But humans were not using earth's resources for those billions of years. That's not a very strong argument.

Doesn't matter. The Earth will continue and we will be long, long gone whether
we recycle or not. Therefore, I don't bother to recycle and never will bother. If you
choose to waste your time and recycle, well, that's up to you. I myself choose not to.

Yea but if we are more careful with it, life will continue on it. Sure, Earth will be here billions of years after us, but in what form?
Listen, I didn't really want to start a "Is recycling worth it" argument, just wanted to know if people who are used to recycling felt weird going into an area where it wasn't required.
I'm still going to recycle no matter what.

If it doesn't matter, why include it in your post? Each person makes their own decision on what they should and should not do, so do whatever you want. I personally don't see it as a waste of time. It takes about 2 extra seconds to place something in a recycle bin instead of the garbage. Woah.

I try to recycle whenever possible but I don't at home anymore since it costs extra to have recycling pickup. Since I also don't have a car to take the stuff to a recycling center everything just goes in my trash.

I'm not sure how me recycling is wasting my time. I step on a pedal and the top of my can opens. There are two buckets, one for trash, one for recycling. No time wasted there. Then, when I go to the trash room, I bring the recycling, too. Same room. So, I guess I waste about 5 seconds total in grabbing the 2nd bag and putting it into the recycling can next to the trash can. Wow, I'm wasting almost 10 seconds a month.
And using your logic, you're going to be dead no matter what so someone should just kill you now.

I just watched this. The show provides a compelling argument as to why recycling paper is a waste of time. I agree
But their primary argument is primarily about how it is not economical to recycle most things. Something like plastic.......... this is not a renewable and petroleum is not an endless resource. I think we should recycle plastic.
They also say that we SHOULD recycle aluminum (I mean ................. did you even watch the episode, bro?) Aluminum, like plastic, is not renewable. It just so happens that we've used so much aluminum, that aluminum is now worth more, hence making recycling aluminum profitable.

Landfills sort the recycleables out anyway when they get the trash, so all you are doing is saving them the labor and transport costs by doing it yourself.
I personally like to recycle just so an illegal immigrant garbage sorter is out of a job.

Recycling is a liberal green idea to make people feel good about throwing shit out. Most of what you recycle goes into a landfill anyway, recycling is just used to make a profit for companies that sell off your waste. Whatever they don't sell goes right in with the rest of the garbage.
All it does it cause a bigger pain and cost for everyone involved, but everyone is brainwashed to need to do it, so they dont care.

No, that part is fine, and more power to them, but the guilt that everyone now feels if they don't put their soda can in the right gabage bin is a social engineering feat of a grand scale. That's the part that annoys me. If you don't do what the liberal green society tells you that you should do people get freaked out and you are labeled an outcast.

I had a hard time getting used to the little recycling that is going on even in areas that do do it...
At home we separate all plastics and metals from bottles, cans to plastic wrappers around groceries all the way down to the slice of cheese (goes into a yellow container... )
http://www.koblenz.de/gesundheit_umwelt/bilder/msvc_intern/3130_13.jpg
Glass by colors, there are containers for green, brown and clear glass... and most glass gets returned for a refund anyway
paper and cardboard goes into a blue container...
The actual house trash remaining is very minimal because people still separate the bio trash and put it on a compost.
It might seem like a hassle to separate that much but it really is just a matter of habit and becomes very natural.

They have recycling in my town, but many times I just throw out my plastics and cans in the regular trash because I do not want that shit in my house. If the bottles are on top of the garbage I will throw them in the recycling can. But I am not digging for it. They should employ the homeless to sort the garbage at the dump, where they belong.
