per Marketwatch.
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-ten-biggest-tech-failures-of-the-last-decade
The article offers some in-depth analysis, but he's the basic list.
#10 - Segways
#9 - Iridium's Satellite Phone
#8 - Palm Treo
#7 - Microsoft Zune
#6 - Sirius and XM Satellite Radio
#5 - Youtube (the explanation here is actually pretty fascinating and something I didn't know)
#4 - Voice-Over-IP
#3 - HD DVD
#2 - Gateway (the entire company)
#1 - Microsoft Vista
Interesting list...anything missing? Anything deserve not to be on there?

I have XM and Vista. I threw my HD DVD player away two months ago.
I also had the Sega CD, 32X, N64 Expansion Pak, Game Gear and probably some other awful electronics.

I've been good about avoiding tech bombs so far, but I'm starting to think that the Kindle will break that string. I just don't see this thing really catching on.
And if Apple does do the big-ass iPod pad they're rumored to be, that'll probably kill it entirely, because that might be a better platform to read books on.

This should be more like "Top Ten List Of Tech Things That Failed In The Media In The Past 5 years"
The only tech failure I have outside of XM is the Dreamcast but I got enough entertainment out of it to make it worth it.
I have Vista too but I didn't have a choice in the matter when buying my laptop.

Iridium is the only real failure on this list.
HD-DVD didn't fail at all, it was a format war, and while that war was going on HD-DVD was quite successful, it just lost a battle. Not a failure.
The rest of the list are products and services that still are in business, still sell their service and product and have a market share. PCWorld has listed the Zune as the 3rd best mp3 player on the market. Vista is liked albeit a shaky start and has an insane user base. Segways are very successful actually, no, they aren't popular in the public but they succeed as a business in private areas.
This list really fails on all levels. Where is the Ngage, the Phantom game console, WindowsME,

After reading the article, #4 was not VOIP. It was Vonage. The blurb actually says that Skype and Comcast are very successful in the VOIP market

Segways are big down here in Florida. The cops in Daytona Beach here use them especially during the bikweeks/speedweeks.

Although, the worst thing you can say about a man is that he rides a Segway.

Also #8 is not the Palm Treo, but rather its manufacturer Palm

The Segway was a joke. I was dating a chick whose dad wanted to get her one when she started college. I thought about what that would look like, one person rolling around campus on a Segway. I'd probably rob them of it for looks like such a tool.
I feel bad for the satellite phone company. Thats alot of money to have pissed away all for naught.

I think I see segways more and more each day....... mall cops mainly. Once the cost of making one comes down Im sure sales will pick up and we will turn into the humans from wall-e

Why the fuck would I buy a Segway to get me somewhere with in walking distance? Theres nowhere to take them. I guarantee you would be ridiculed riding one around town. And what do you do lock them up to bike racks?

Just as long as you didn't have that god awful Virtual Boy. What the hell was Nintendo thinking?
To make the list, a product had to be widely recognized and widely available to customers. It had to be aimed at a large global market.
Last I checked, Sirius XM wasn't aimed at a "global market" unless they take the internet feeds into account. Also I think it's a bit too early to declare satellite radio a failure.

You're right. Their stock is up 30 cents since February to a hit whopping 35 cents. Don't call it a comeback...

Vista started out really bad but I've been using it for months now with no problems.
Only problem I have is that there's no setting to record internal sound in Vista. XP had it in an easy to access menu but Vista, no dice. That means I still have to have a XP comp around just to record sounds I may be playing on that comp at that time. I do that a lot to make little system noises, ringtones or just sound bites for my own amusement.
It was a major disappointment for me with Vista.

Right click on the speaker icon, click "recording devices". Find "What U Here" or "Stereo Mix" depending on your sound card. Right click on it, set as default device. Now your default recording device will be everything played on windows.

#10 - Segways agreed
#9 - Iridium's Satellite Phone agreed
#8 - Palm Treo was ok a few years ago, killed by the smart phone
#7 - Microsoft Zune top 5 most sold MP3 players, this article sucks
#6 - Sirius and XM Satellite Radio After the merge, agreed
#5 - Youtube (the explanation here is actually pretty fascinating and something I didn't know) Still strong
#4 - Voice-Over-IP Skype, Vonage, over 5 million in US alone... still to be determined.
#3 - HD DVD Only part of the story
#2 - Gateway (the entire company) Failure started more than a decade ago, this article is flawed.
#1 - Microsoft Vista Agreed, MS is rushing to release a new OS
Interesting list...anything missing? Anything deserve not to be on there?
This list like many sucks and only provokes discussion.

Just got my new computer with Vista home premium on it. Woa this will takes some getting used to, especially the file system ortheir version of it.
1)Anyone know a good tutorial, with pictures and videos explaining how to use vista?
2) ive heard that they made Windows 7 easily upgradable from Vista. But its a new OS so doesnt that mean losing all your data and knowing HOW to install a new OS?

Ubuntu is a better OS. I have tested many; Vista is not in my top 5, XP Pro would be 3, OSX is 2, and Ubuntu is 1. Of course this is my opinion and the last OSX I tested was Leopard.
