View Full Version : Are You One Of Those Douchebags...
...who starts disliking something once it becomes popular?
You know people like this; they absolutely love a certain TV show or band that's under the radar. Once they start taking off and gain popularity, though, they claim it's all changed and they're off the bandwagon.
I even know people who won't even give a fair shake to something that's already wildly popular, figuring that if it turns on the masses there's no way it could excite their oh-so-dignified palate.

It's fun to have a personal relationship with something. It feels like its your own and when it becomes popular, its not your little secret anymore.
I continue to like something if I feel it has value regardless of how many people like it. Popularity doesn't automatically equate lack of artistic merit or joy something can bring you.
Good topic G.

a lot of things do go downhill once it becomes accepted into the mainstream. Alot of bands or comedians or shows with a smaller, more selective audience, can take more risks and be more unique. But if they get something going and become hugely popular, alot of them will start watering their stuff down and therefore, they now suck
But then there are popular things that can still be great while popular. Radiohead, Quentin Tarantino, George Carlin, South Park are all things that got really popular but was still able to stay true to themselves
So I'll stay loyal to something if the quality is still there, but when they suck I have no problem bailing
I guess this would be a rare time I would pee in a butt

I just have a dissolving loyalty complex wherein I only can bother with caring about something for a little bit then I move on to something else.
I probably developed this pattern from playing too much Megaman as a child. Monkey see blue robot man stand on platform too long, platform opens, blue man falls, go boom. Learns to jump. Monkey applies what he learns to life.

No. Case and point: The Gaslight Anthem have gotten to be a pretty big deal band as of late. I remember seeing them at my high school. I was a fan when you couldn't find their cds anywhere.
I don't like them less because they're popular. In fact, I'm happy for them. Good for their success.

I don't hate shows that become popular BUT I tire of stuff a lot sooner than most people. I gave up on Seinfeld way early and dare to say Curb is over. I will continue to watch Curb but its pretty weak the last 2-3 cycles.

Raise your hands... who feels this way about certain women in their lives after a period of time?
Edit: I meant to be quoting Drjoek's post right above mine when asking this question. Not the thread question itself.

I fucking laugh at those insecure, oh-so-cool, douchebags.
And I also laugh at their counterpart: the fairweather fan and/or the backpeddler.
I judge everything on it's own merit.... regardless of popularity or public opinion. Always have. Always will.

I tend to love things way after they were new or popular. I just started liking Leonard Cohen last night. Only took me decades.

it really doesn't matter. i'm just plain fickle. for something to grab my attention and hold it without me getting bored, there has to be something special there. it's a rarity. when it does happen, it sort of freaks me out. it also has to be difficult for me to figure out. if i can figure something out, i tire of it in no time. if something challenges me, i'm interested and invested for serious.
but ummm..yeah back on topic..i try to avoid things that are already popular - not solely based on popularity, but because i sort of expect them to be watered down versions of true art made palatable for the masses. but i do my best to give things a chance.

This is very true. I always want nothing but the best for the artists I like, and I'm always happy if/when they make it big.
But all too often I end up disappointed by those that hit the big time. A case in point is Soul Asyum. I loved their early, noisy stuff, and I even was a huge fan of Grave Dancer's Union when it first came out. Yeah, "Runaway Train" was overplayed, but the album as a whole wasn't too bad.
Anything after that sucked, though. It was no longer about putting out the best album they could make; it was about duplicating (or exceeding) the sales figures of GDU. "Misery" may have been the worst song that band ever released, and it was pretty clear that some of the band's spirit was lost.
I'm also insane, though, and continued to purchase anything they put out.

I'll say it flat out: if it gets to popular, I'm out.
Douchebag, I.
It depends on what it is. That Gnarls Barkley song from a year or two ago, it was catchy, I loved it, didn't care about anyone else.
But I've never seen any more than two seconds of Friends or Sex in the City. I'm not interested in the popcorn films.
It's more than that, though. Why would I like the same thing you rabble are hot for?
I do another thing that'll piss you off: I get into things after everybody's done with it, especially with music.

i also think, maybe a reason a lot of bands are better when they are smaller is because thats all they got
They have their first album or two and then they are out of their creativity. its gotta be difficult to keep up with putting out great stuff and its going to be rare to find the genius or the band with the certain amount of chemistry and knowledge to keep it all going. But that makes me love the bands that got mainstream success and still put out great stuff even more

I like to be my own person, but I am not going to turn away from something I like just because has become popular. I'm in lala land so much of the time I have no freakin idea what is popular or not.
Although when I named my kids I didn't want a popular name. I would be pissed if I started hearing that Burkely or Greta became a popular name.

Nope.
I love it if things I like become huge. It's boring if I couldn't talk about bands or TV shows or movies with anyone else. I also don't have any qualms about dropping something if it gets shitty, which does unfortunately happen with many things as they go mainstream. They often end up trying to appeal to too many different audiences. Some can pull it off, some can't. Vive la difference.
I will not, however, see a band if they're playing a venue that holds over a thousand people, though that's mostly due to me being old and cranky at this point.
