View Full Version : I can't write

It's so rare that I actually have to write more than a few words, I find my hand cramps up if I have to write much more than that. It's not old man arthritis thing. It's just that the muscles used for handwriting rarely get used. Before computers, I could easily write page after page. Anyone else have the same problem these days?

I have to use a keyboard, a mixing board or a tablet almost ever day, and I was developing hand problems. I started using those hand grip exercisers and they have helped a great deal. I know it isn't the same problem, but I would think it could have the same beneficial results.

As far as I know, the restrictions are only the "That's Life: The Forum" that you have to be good in. If it was EVERY "That's Life" thread, then every political thread here would have to be locked and everyone banned for life.

Cellular degeneration? I dunno. Maybe it's like if you don't speak for weeks then you talk for an hour with someone and you actually put inflection and energy into your voice and then you have a sore throat from it? That's my guess.
That or else you just can't write anymore. In which case the best course of action is to wail like a seal and slap your flipper hands against the desk edge with great pomp.

It's cool PB.
I can't dance. And I can't talk. In fact, the only thing about me is the way I walk.

I have to write for 50% of my gig, and after about 20 minutes have to put the pen down. Hand grip exercisers are a great idea. I keep one at the desk.

But my point is, it's so rare that I actually have to write, it hurts when I do. Why would I do exercises for something I rarely do? I just find it odd how writing has become almost unnecessary today.

What do you do when after writing too much, your shoulders just collapse?

Same thing happens to me. I used to use my hands much more than now, and I did fine detail work. Now, I no longer have the strength and precision. It sucks. I should do more massages and stuff that I used to. It helped.

Try squeezing a stress ball, it helps me when when my hands get crampy after scaling teeth all day (same type of grip on an instrument as you would use holding a pencil/pen).

Same thing here. I used to write letters all the time and in college took pages of notes per class with no problem. Now if I try to write a letter or take notes on a conference call my hand hurts very quickly. Damn computers. Using a computer every day gave me a ganglion cyst on my wrist (kind of like carpal tunnel) and I had to get wrist surgery! I'd rather be writing than stuck at my desk behind a computer 8 hours a day. I think it's making my eyes go bad too.

I got this when I was pregnant. It actually goes away in pregnant women once they deliver the baby, but anyway...point is...my hands still get sore when I write a lot, pretty sure it is the carpal tunnel syndrome kicking in. I have to wear my wrist braces and then I am fine.
I like to write long letters to old time relatives who do not have a computer.
I like to still send written letters to people. It feels a lot more personable. I like to receive handwritten Thank You's too as well as send them. It is just polite.
It must be the classic "use it or lose it" syndrome.
I don't remember the last time I wrote out anything of any length so I don't know if I'd cramp up, but I think I probably would.
It's the same thing with memorized phone numbers - I used to know dozens of 'em off the top of my head, but since the advent of the cell phone with the stored phone book, I don't know anyone's number anymore.
We're doomed as a species.

I find that I can still physically write but I'll have to 2nd guess myself before I write certain cursive letters so I don't ruin a greeting card or something similar.
But I haven't run into my hand cramping, yet. I'm sure it's on the way with all the reliance we have on comps.
