I got to wondering today, whatever happened to all the fallout shelters that were built in the 50's and 60's?

I remember that when i was a kid, i worked in the sears in hicksville. I remember that there used to be an old beatup fallout sign outside of the building. I usewd to wonder if it was still there, or even stocked. This would have been about 1989 or 90.

judging by what became of the fallout shelter in my HS (it became a storage room) it probably wasn't there anymore.

and what about those home shelters people bought and installed in their basements?

I vaguely remember hearing some wad trying to sell plans for underground shelters on Coast to Coast a few years back. I think there was an asteroid heading our way that was going to destroy the earth. Funny, I don't remember the impact.

There is still a shelter sign on an old bank building a 5 minute walk from me. I'll be grabbing my weapons and heading straight there if something goes down.

My nephew bought a handyman special house and they found a fallout shelter in the basement. There were a hundred tins of crackers and water in cans and stuff. We opened up a few tins and the crackers were inside this yellowing wax paper and they still looked crispy. No one tried it, and they threw it out. It was cool though. I always had boyhood fantasies about finding a shelter and hanging out in it. My office building was built in the 50's (also in Hicksville, in the LILCO building) and I see the fallout signs all the time. There is a bathroom there where it has on the door that it is a fallout shelter for one person!

There's one by my house but all that's in there is some guy screaming "GARY!" over and over again.

I'd build one for my house. It'd be a nice summer project.

Sounds neat.
You can get plans here: http://www.conelrad.com

And the audio from all those official civil defense records (as in, vinyl records).
