New computer is due to arrive in a few days.
Had my old one for many years and need to bring some files to the new one.

I bought a 32gb thumb drive and am copying my music, pics and videos onto it (to transfer via USB when new PC comes).

Besides "favorites" what else do i need to take? I use hotmail so e-mail is no issue.

Do you copy your old exe files or just freshly download the programs on the new computer?

I cannot believe how many free programs I have (utilities like spybot, regclean, HijackThis, diskeeper, crossloop, belarc advisor, etc..)

As a rule, I usually go to C:\Documents and Settings\Username and copy My Documents, Favorites and Desktop. But this only works well if you have your pictures in My Pictures, you music in My Music, etc.

In any case I do the above then if I know of other places I have important files stored (pics, video, music, etc.), I'll copy those as well.

As for exe files, just reinstall the software. There isn't a clean and pretty way to copy your programs over. The installation modifies your registry, adds .dll files, and plenty else that just isn't worth the trouble to attempt to mimic manually....and you might have license key issues.

Also if it's a clean OS, I wouldn't even bother installing utilities like spybot, regclean, HijackThis.

I'm sure some will disagree with me...

If you're getting rid of your old computer, buy a hard drive enclosure and keep your old hard drive. That way, if there's something you forget to copy over, you can still get it. After a few months, you can re-format your old drive and use it for extra storage or back-ups.

I used to worry about transferring and saving stuff before I changed computers or formatted, but then I started learning that there's nothing I'd really miss other than pictures/music/videos.

It's indeed an excellent idea. You can also just stick it in your computer if you have an extra drive bay.

Nothing. A new pc is a blank canvas waiting for fresh porn!

Wow... I thought your advice would be to cancel his order and buy a Mac...

Good tips. Yeah i think ill limit it to music/vids/pics. My old PC uses USB 1.1 so last night i tried copying "my documents" to the 32gb flash drive and it said it would take 330 minutes!

I let it run tomorrow while at work.

Now all thats left is making a decsision on Anti-virus software wether free or fee based (even with all the treads arguing back and forth). There is no clear cut winner.

Its down to Avast 4.8, AVG 8.5, Kaspersky, and ESET NOD32.

I recently replaced my laptop's hard drive. The old one didn't fail, I just though it was time and didn't want to wait until it was too late. For a week or so before the change I noted the programs I used and those I reinstalled on the new drive. I kept the old drive and put in in an enclosure so I can still access files if I need them.

After I installed the new drive there were a few things that I had missed and had to port over but most of the crap I had installed on the old drive I can live without.

whats the point of using a usb drive when you can either plug in a network cord, or if its a desktop just slap the drive in an extra bay and copy everything over?

Actually, I have 1000 songs, 100 videos and 5000 pictures, which all together = 25GB. So it will take 4 hours to copy all that to my 32gb thumb drive. Easy to reload onto the new PC.

I will download Avast 4.8, Spyware Doctor, Firefox, Adobe Reader 8, Steam, Trillian and Bitlord.
The other 30 programs ive downloaded over the years i will not bother with.

I also have to try and reload Microsoft Office 2003 from an old CD (so expensive otherwise!)

I have 7 hard drives spanning a total of 1.5 terabytes. I move the hard drives with the computer, Windows gets it's own hard drive thus it is just a matter of disk imaging.

I used to use a 60gb drive as a backup that would move from old pc to new pc carrying my music, pictures, and installation files for my most used programs. When i got my newest pc i bought a 500gb sata drive. I installed it and wanted to clone my C: drive to it instead of reinstalling windows on it. Stupid me wasnt reading the setup properly and cloned my c drive over my backup losing everything. Almost 50 gigs of music gone. I could make one big playlist and let it play thru and you wouldnt hear the same song twice for 9 days.

Oh well just started over.

But i prefer using a second drive for storing anything you want to keep with you for transfers to a new pc or if you want a fresh windows install

I wish I could afford SSDs, and only 3 of the drives are newer. The negative is the noise this computer puts out.
