Looking to get a cheap lappy.
I have a PC at home that will handle most of the HARD work so i dont need it to be super fast.
I want reliability, good wireless range, and mostly intel CPU.
And cheaper. I have a couple friends with acers. Ones an old when witha kid that knows what he is doing and it has been running strong for him for several years.
How about Toshiba?
No Macs.
What else???
A MAC!!!
It rocks!!!

Could you live with a netbook? If so, the MSI Wind netbooks are sweet.
Though I'd get XP off it and either slap on the Win 7 RC or Ubuntu.

Mine is a 17" Lenovo Y710 series that is well speced out and under $1000.
Acer is my choice though for good cost efficient/best bang for the buck laptops. Asus Eee for the best netbooks.

Even though a few posters on this board have shown me some stories that HP got a few low grades in an independent survey, I'm still a HP guy.
Love the look of the machines. Love how they have very nice displays standard on most models. Like how they have one of the best websites to assemble a notebook with the most options available.
I've had 2 of them, one a refurb that lasted like 3 or 4 years and I really only dumped it because it wasn't playing the games I wanted, and also the one I recommended for my grandma works great too.

I have recommended HP to my parents for some time now. It is true their customer service got low marks, but the still make good products and are worth a look at.

My family got my mother a Toshiba a few years ago. With a $20 RAM upgrade the thing will last her for many years to come, the things are great.
Also, Toshiba sells a gaming line of Laptops that I am very impressed with. My buddy Grim Sanity has one and the thing is tits. Dual NVIDA graphics cards. The thing burns your leg as it vents if you lay it on your lap.

Acer intel dual core @ 1.73 GHZ. I tossed an extra gig of ram it in. Paid $500.00. I just use it to browse the net, watch an occasional movie and photoshop.
I laugh at people who spend $2k on a laptop and just play solitare and use facebook

don't get a metal laptop, they are notorious for horrible wifi range.
and most laptops are reliable as long as you don't abuse them, most issues i've seen with users laptops is from abuse.
i presently have a HP/Dell/Sony/and old ibm, and a macbook pro, i'm not big on the widescreens that a lot of manufacturers use, so i tend to use the old hp the most.
it's all plastic and gets great wifi reception, my only complaint under windows are the fans! which aren't an issue at all using linux...
the dell is uber quiet with any os....
its also partially metal as well.
i honestly wouldn't pay more then 400 bucks for an adequate windows machine.

You must know my husband. I wanted a really cool laptop that was well over $1000, and he said "no, you just use it for facebook" Haha! He made me get the $450 Gateway. It is ok, I guess. It works for facebook!

I have 5 computers in all. 3 desktops and 2 laptops. They are all Dell.
I only buy Dell and would never even think about buying any other brand.

I have a Mac Book Pro and it can do all sorts of fancy things.
Apparently the Mac people can't read.
I second the Dell recommendation. I won't say we've never had problems, but I will say we've never had to pay for a repair or had any troubles with Dell's service

My wife and I both have Dells for our personal laptops. Her wireless card died, but that's really the only major problem we've had in 3-4 years.
My work laptop is a Lenovo. It's a beast and perfect for work, but I like my Dell more.
I'll be purchasing an Asus next, but that's because I'm switching to a netbook.

I think with Tiger and Newegg that you can get the extended warranty which I suggest if you are truly going to be mobile.
