Today I had to do a reboot of my computer. This of course means that I have a shitload of files that I need to "recover". How in the bloody hell am I supposed to pull this off?

Are you saying that you had to reinstall Windows and now you must restore files from a backup?

It all depends. Did you use a backup program to do it? If so, you can probably reinstall it and have it handle the restore for you.

If you just copied files to an external hard drive or other storage media, just re-copy the files to where they were originally.

Yes....I think.

I reinstalled Windows and did the reboot with the ability to restore files.

Well, then, there should be a Restore function within Windows itself that will work with the disk image it created. Run that.

I gotta say, though, my favorite way to back up a computer is to just copy the data files themselves to an external hard drive. You don't need to back up applications or system files, especially since they're usually the problem if you have to reinstall.

next time install windows on one partition and save your data on a separate partition. that way when you reinstall windows, your data doesnt get touched

That's OK if the problem is software related -- i.e. Windows just shit the bed -- but it's no protection if the problem is a physical failure of the hard drive that will require it to be replaced. Really important data has to be off that computer somewhere.

Yes that is true. It is no substitute for a good backup of your system. BUT since epo has had to restore his windows installation twice now I think he should definitely consider it. It would make the whole experience a lot less painful. And it only makes making a backup easier (all you have to do is backup your data partition)

Yeah, if he won't stay off those Asian ladyboy sites sending viruses out, that would be a good solution for him.

There is a way to find it "free" that can not be promoted here.
