I tuned to 1010 AM on the way home today and noticed that it wasn't in it's normal all news format, it was a talk program. Thought maybe it was something new they were trying on Friday nights. Then came the break and it said I was listening to talk radio 1010 out of Toronto. That's about 300 miles away from where I am here in western NJ. I remember this happening once before 8 or 9 years ago. Pretty nifty.

it's probably just some left-wing conspiracy.

it's the liberal canadian government trying to brainwash you. they are boosting the power of their broadcasts all over the country to sway the minds of weak conservative americans. don't give in jezo, don't give in.

I know stuff like this can happen, just pointing out that whatever causes it is going on tonight and AM signals are traveling far, and it's nifty.

You have not stumbled upon something new. It has been happening since the dawn of radio. Do a quick study on amplitude modulation broadcasts and atmospheric conditions.
When I was a kid, and the Rangers were not playing, I would hop over to WTOP out of DC and catch the Caps.
I also here there may be a new satellite technology whereby the broadcasts will span an entire continent.
Crazy stuff.

A guy I worked with was a short wave radio guy. He said you could bounce signals off the atmosphere at certain times and go thousands of miles with it.

a few years ago, due to some weird atmospheric conditions, i was able to talk to my dad (who died in a fire in 1969) on the ham radio.

Every night since 9 years ago I cannot tune my radio to 1010 wins and pick up some random Toronto station from hundreds of miles away. Normally I will hear the NYC station as expected and not have that be overpowered by something from another country.
Stuff like this is fun when it happens.
The short wave radio stuff is a whole different crazy realm of radio. Like Moe said, some of those guys can talk to people on the other side of the planet when things go right.
Shortwave also has some creepy stuff on it.

Sort of like that radio station on Lost, except real.

Last year I actually picked up Ron and Fez on my FM radio. I even called in and they talked to me.

But did they play your song?
That would have been awesome!

Not for nuthin..it may be the Solar flares going on right now causing it.
Then again, when I was a guard at the beach in NJ, we used to listen to a radio station on Cape Cod all the time on a shitty 9 dollar radio.
