I have a feeling that it is allegorical. It takes place in South Africa, not the most racially inclusive place on the planet to begin with. From what I have seen, I suspect the aliens are the equivelant of Muslims, and suspected of terrorism, and disliked for being different and trapped where they are. Maybe not unlike Palistinians. I think its along those lines. Again, I only say this from what I have seen. Its a weird idea, though, like as if a space traveling ship could have difficulty getting home and need to settle on a planet that's inhabited with lesser advanced species. Yet somehow, it seems far fetched that scientists wouldn't welcome a glimpse into their technology and offer them sanctuary in a safer, less prejudicial location. I think if it was real, they would try to tow the disabled ship somewhere where where it could be studied.

From San Diego Comic Con:
Much of the early attention at Comic-Con focused on the 20 or so minutes of James Cameron's Avatar that screened to great acclaim on Thursday to the 6,500 fans in Hall H. But a smaller group of ardent fans and journalists, including SCI FI Wire, got to screen an even more top-secret movie in its entirety: District 9, from producer Peter Jackson and newbie South African director Neill Blomkamp.
And the consensus among a small group of viewers on Thursday night was that District 9 is the sci-fi movie to beat. We can't give a formal review at this point, but we can tell you that the movie is original and unexpected, with a gritty look and visceral feel that deftly mix complex visual effects with the grim reality of a South African slum and rocking action with deep character development. The movie combines social commentary, satire and splattery R-rated sci-fi action.
I saw this and, well, I'm a bit disappointed. I left with the same feeling I did after seeing Sunshine. The first 75% is great, original with a fresh take on sci-fi and above all intelligent. And then it devolves into a standard Hollywood action movie (or thriller in Sunshine's case). Which is not to say I didn't like it because the first 75% was absolutely fantastic. And the ending was very good. They left it way open for a sequel while still feeling like they gave you an appropriate conclusion. But I've seen the climax of the film a million times already. It was especially disappointing considering how good and original it was up until that point. The acting ranged from great (Wikus, the main character) to incredibly awful (the Nigerian warlord). Some aspects of the plot seem absolutely ridiculous when you think about it later but don't seem like a problem while you are watching it.
That being said it's still the best movie I've seen all summer. Although I hope Ponyo and Inglorious Basterds are better because I was hoping this was going to be better.

Saw it. I very much agree with Hbox that this super-interesting, thought provoking movie kinda melts into a rather standard action movie.
I gotta say though, the TONE of this movie is unlike any other sci-fi movie I've ever seen. It's... well.... "real". It shot in a realistic manner, and the overall "welp... this is how things would be on earth if aliens were living among us for 20 years" plot is well developed. Meaning... it isn't overly developed. It just felt right.
The are many many scenes of humans interacting with aliens in the same way that humans would interact with a typical thug or a homeless person. Ignore them.. maybe they'll leave you alone. Or.... talk shit to 'em because they're beneath you. Or what have you.
Totally and 100% refreshing. A very interesting take on a basic story that's older than dirt.
Too bad the tail end of it was basically a video game.
8/10.

I saw this last week with a movie reviewer friend of mine. It was really well done. They kind of gloss over the reason the ship is hovering over Johannesburg, but it really draws you in by the end. At some points in the action it seemed like being in a good video game.

Ron talking about it has made me want to talk about it. I really loved the world that was set up and it was really different and really cool. However, they seemed to REALLY rush the story towards the end to get that ridiculous video game sequence with the giant walking robot in. Also, my wife made a really good point about how unimaginative the alien weapons were in that they just looked like more advanced human weapons.
Some spoilers:
1. The Christopher character was COMPLETELY rushed and nothing about him was explained, and it was kind of dumb. Why not explain who he was?
2. They had very little explanation about the ship. That bothered me. It seemed lazy.
3. The tension between the MNU agents and the local warlords could have been extremely cool, but again, they skipped over it just to rush to a final gigantic battle scene.
4. Why didn't the aliens use their own weapons to fight? Why were they so weak?
This reminded me of Cloverfield. For some reason key plot points don't get explained, and people will defend it with things like, "go to this secret website put out by the director's cousin and type in 'BBAFDL' and you will see some hints to the aliens origin".

Just saw it today and I thought it was as good as I thought it would be, I didnt read a single review and only saw the first teaser trailer, and only heard of what Ron thought today. The FX looked pretty damn seamless, to the point I didnt even think about it, it was cool to see a different take on the overplayed alien contact storyline. I didnt mind the formula type drama in the third act because the effects were so well generated. The aliens weapons looked familiar but what they did was cool as shit. Great mother ship wanted to see more of the inside.
I thought the very last flower scene was well shot.

My question is this:
Why did the Christopher character give the canister to his friend to hide when they had just extracted the fluid? He said he was going to be searched, but they never showed him being searched. He just sneaked out the back door and no one ever knew he had been there. If he had just kept the canister, the whole movie could have been avoided.
Still, I overall kind of liked the movie. I got bored at parts, but I've seen a lot worse.

Christopher was given the canister to hide, not the other way around, and it had to be hid, taking it would be risky, and they had to assume they would be searched, other circumatances made it that they weren't, they wore little clothes so there wasn't any place to hide anything,...did i make a valid rebuttle?

This wasn't a big deal to me until I just saw it pointed out, however considering there were so many weapons inside the house Christopher should have known it would have been the worst place to keep the cannister. Also, at no point are any Aliens actually searched. Christopher snuck off in that scene, right? Why wouldn't he have just taken the cannister?

i'm thinking their thought was if they took the canister out of there to hide it somewhere else, they wear little to no clothes and they would be seen holding the canister, i guess they thought it would be safer to hide it there than taking it somewhere, that one alien said that the place was crawling with MNU. my beef was how easy the guy found the canister in all that shit.

I was so excited to see this movie, but it really disappointed me. I have heard it described as intelligent over and over, but I just don't get it. The story was so small and skeletal. I was extremely bored by this movie, as it seemed like one long shootout sequence. I fell asleep twice. What was that fluid? How does it power a ship and alter genetic code? Where did it come from? Why did their ship jettison the "control pod" into the ground if the ship was going to need it to fly back home? Why not just stash the tiny vials of "fluid" that can power the ship for years at a time all over the ship?

I did not like it at all. I was bored watching it. HAd millions of flaws in the movies. I hate to be a not picker but my biggest issue is this.
It took the aliens 30 years to get the fuel. Then the guy spills what looks like at least half of it on himself and yet the aliens still have enough to fly home.
Other issues
Makes no sense at all. Other issues. Why did not the aliens use the damn weapons on the humans?
How the heck would the alien know spilling gas on a human would turn him to an alien? Did the alien spill it on his dog in his home planet and the dog become a human.
The aliens were MO-rons at the beginning of the movie and then we find out they are nice caring smart people. That is not character developement, that is just changing crap.
The main character is a jerk, he only does crap to help himself and at the end we are supposed to give a crap about him.
Really that big ship can be flown by one alien?
Did the alien forget there is NO FOOD on the ship he is on that he is making this long trip home.
I have other issues but that is it for now
fezident
09-03-2009, 07:19 AM
CYYFYY,
I'm feelin' ya. I thought the same thing about the "precious" fluid! In fact... that whole component of the plot makes no sense.
The fluid takes years to locate and consolidate into one tube, and yet... when a portion of it spills.... there's no need to harvest more of it?
I also found it rather corny and convenient that the INSTANT the aliens put the final drop of fluid in the vial is the exact INSTANT that the agents arrive at the door to evict the aliens. I mean really.
And WHY THE HELL WOULD THE ALIENS KEEP IT A SECRET??!
They aliens are anxious to go home.
The humans want the aliens to go home.
So.... why not just tell the humans "hey... help us to gather this fluid, and we can get outta here."
Or, better yet, why not simply say to the humans "there is no need to evict us. We now have the means to travel back to our planet. Thank you for all you've done but... we would like to leave now."
And, why not take all 1.2 million aliens back with you? Why travel in an empty ship?!
And...why did the aliens even HAVE weapons with them? Was it to protect themselves in the event that they met up with some hostile creatures on another planet?! Hmmm.
And finally, why the hell does that videogame-y looking suit even exist?? Who was it even designed for? Why the fuck did it fit a human?? The aliens didn't even know they were gonna be stranded on earth? Why the heck did they have an automated bio-mechanical suit that perfectly fits a human being? That doesn't make a lick o' sense.
Fuck this movie.
foodcourtdruide
09-03-2009, 03:47 PM
fezident and cyyfyy are dead-on. If the magic fluid was able to power the ship why didn't they just use it IMMEDIATELY? Why wait for it to get scatterred all across Africa? Also, if Christopher had more intelligence than the other aliens, why wasn't he their representative? It just made no sense at all. And what annoys me is how people are saying this film is brilliant and is a new take on the sci-fi film. I can think of 10 sci-fi films that are much smarter off the top of my head.
