View Full Version : Movies/TV Shows You'd Want to see Remade

With Dom DeLuise's passing, I went back and revisited one of my favorite "camp" movies, that being Cannonball Run.
And although I love the Cannonball movies, I couldn't help but wonder how it would look if it was remade and retold with modern stars, technology, and aspects that weren't around in the early 80's.
For example:
I'm really not sure who would play JJ and Victor's roles in the new movie. Although part of me says I could totally see Clooney as JJ. And maybe Jon Favreau as Victor.
The Roger Moore character I would re-cast as either Pierce Brosnan or Hugh Jackman.
The finale in Los Angeles would feature newscopters and mayhem as the participants tried to get to the finish line. Kind of like "The Chase", a movie that was a little ahead of it's time when it came to media saturation.
How would stuff like GPS, cell phones, etc. figure into the race?
I have no idea who I'd cast as the "Hot Chicks in the Lambo".

The Philadelphia Experiment.
It's good for a cheesy 80's sci-fi flick... but if you were to film it like the real (and not so real) story that went along with it, I think a good one could be made.

Escape from New York. I feel like we could do a lot better forecasting what technology will look like in the future. It seems totally bizarre now that in 1981 people thought that the airplanes of 1997 would look completely different, but that computers would be basically the same.

Patrick Dempsey as Baxter, works at some .com in Manhattan. And Katherine Heigl is a secretary since we obviously don't have elevator operators anymore. His bosses use his studio apartment to fuck. I'm just shocked it hasn't happened yet, really.

They already remade Escape from New York. It was called Escape from L.A.

I was actually just thinking that. When I saw that movie for the first time a couple months ago, my initial though was how long would it be before they make this movie starring Ashton Kutcher.

I want to retract my earlier statement about Sydney Goldfarb being played by Brosnan or Jackman. The perfect candidate would be Jason Statham.

I don't think there is any way to do that script right.
And Andy Garcia should be waterboarded.
I'd love to see someone try to make a version of Foreign Correspondent (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032484/). It's an old Hitchcock film from 1940 that Hitch admitted in the book "Truffaut on Hitchcock" that was screwed up when Gary Cooper turned down the lead and Joel McCrea was cast.

Yeah, i suppose the script could be seen as lacking, but i think George Hamilton could make even Shakespeare sound horrible.
But then, i havent read "Dont Mind if I Do", so i may be jumpin the gun here.

I say they remake "Cool Hand Luke" , but instead of prison camp, "Lucas" the protagonist, is imprisoned in a bad relationship with a witty sass-mouthed Kate Hudson, and instead of attempting to eat 50 eggs to actualize his true masculine character, he has to eat his own sense of dignity (and overall sense of self) to convince Boss (Hudson) that he is worthy of her love and thereby freeing himself from the shackles of his own douchiness.

You're trying to be provocative/funny right? No, not even provocative, cause who cares about that movie. How could anyone anywhere ever remake Cannonball Run and make a good film? That was a product of its time that we all laugh at now not with, and it could never be made to be funny in any contemporary sense. Stop trying to be profound Matty. You're just old. And hilarious.

Why would you remake a masterpiece? It would be like remaking Buckaroo Banzai or They Live.

When IFC first started they had a 15 second featurette where a figure in Indie film could 'rant' about any topic. The only two I remember were Kevin Smith talking about film makers who put their name above the title instead of the production companies name above the title, and Frank Whaley who talked about movie remakes. He said he didn't understand why they remade good movies, and that they should only remake bad movies to get them right. He was in a movie about dancing nazis, and anyone should feel free to remake that.

How about a mash up reboot of all three?
Buckaroo Repo
The story about a neurosurgeon, particle physicist, race car driver, rock star, and repo man who is searching for a 1964 Chevrolet Malibu, which turns out to have the port to the 8th dimension in the trunk.
Searching for this is also an FBI agent (named "Nada Johns"), who is in reality one of the Red Lectroids aliens from Planet 10, who have secretly come to this earth and reality to manage humans through the subliminal advertising. She ends up falling for our hero, and with the help of her knowledge, a cryptic nonverbal message from an orbiting spacecraft, a pair of sunglasses that exposes the aliens, a Samurai sword, a public access station, and the Circle Jerks will Buckaroo Repo be able to expose the truth.
In the end he learns that "the life of a neurosurgeon, particle physicist, race car driver, rock star, repo man is always intense."
Directed by Emilio Estevez and starring Zach Effron, Miley Cyrus and Regis Philbin.

Sylvester Stallone has been talking about re-making Death Wish for a couple of years now. I found this quote from him on how the new movie would differ from the original. Remember this is Stallone talking and he's going to be the star and direct it. It sounds like Paul Kersey's middle name is going to be Rambo.
The idea in the original of Jeff Goldblum as a mugger who breaks into an apartment seems very simplistic. It gives you an idea of how bad the elevation of violence has become. I want to focus on defense attorneys, on the people who are really allowing this crap to happen. Not so much the guy out in the street, but who permits it? What if it happened to you? What if your daughter down the hall was grabbed and her eyes were put out, would you want to defend that guy? There's moral questions here that are being presented that have not been asked in 30 years. So it's not the pacifist. This fella I see, and I'm giving you a little hint here, he was a very violent human being. An ex-convict who walked the walk, was accepted back into society, did everything he could to be clean. When the incident happens, he reverts back, and it's like "My God." Now you've unleashed a man who really understands the world of violence. He isn't burdened with this passive-aggressive conscientious objector thing that's been done. It's really what happens when the wolf in sheep's clothing goes back to the wolf.

Now, Lets admit that remakes are not great, rarely better than the original. But for the sake of argument, if the end product would be as good or better than the original, what remake would you like to see made?
For me,it would be quantum leap. and perhaps not a remake but i could do with a continuation without bakula. It's not my favorite show, but i did love it. i think there's so much more could be done with that concept.
