I hate Bums

Most are relatively harmless and ask for change and leave you alone when you say no.

This evening, while walking home from work though, a bum asked me for the following:

Change - I said I had none (truth)
Smokes - I said I had no more (while smoking)
A ride - As I was walking.

After that exchange, he threw his dirty snot rag at me. Lord knows what that vile creature has been hacking up into that thing. I was floored and told him that he ruined my perception of all bums.

So, now I hate bums.

Any experience with bums make you hate them?

I worked for many years in downtown Seattle, pioneer Square area which was full of panhandlers of many sorts. Out and out bums to junkies to actual needy people.

I rarely gave money, sometimes I would give or buy food for someone that seemed genuinely needy. I worked there long enough to see the area develop into a place where all sorts of cons happen.

The guy selling stolen shirts on the street because "his girlfriend tossed him out because she is a junkie", the "I got beaten up and rolled last night and I need fare to get home/ take care of my mom/kids/ ferry fare, add anything. I have heard variations on this story in a number of cities.

Heard plenty of stories enough to sometimes politely listen and tell them "pretty good" or just dismiss them. I did give a five to a extremely drunk guy that told me he was a monkey grinder and he needed five to bail his monkey out.

In my field I have dealt with quite a few, but on a personal level I just do not want to acknowledge them. Some I feel sorry for, some I despise, and some are funny but they are a reminder of society's lazy.

I lived in West Philly for 8 years, I never had a bum throw a snotrag at me. My favorite was the black fella who asked me "What's the difference between a black man and a nigger?" then as I'm mumbling "well, umm, I..uhhh" he says "boy, I'm just fuckin' with ya! lemme get a dollar for some beer". I gave him 5 for the laff.

i had a very dear friend, Joe Comfort, when I worked in New Haven. Joe was a homeless man who was a victim of an accident that left him with amnesia...and i think some other problems. i don't know if that's the full story, but it's the one he gave me, and i didn't ask for more.

i took care of joe as well as i could - i was like 21 and had no serious financial responsibilities - but he gave me much more than i ever did him.

we met this one day as i came out of work...he was agitated because someone had stolen his bucket and squeegee, which he used to wash windows to make enough money to eat (and, i'm being honest, drink. can you blame him?) so i threw him like 40 bucks. it was nothing to me at the time. no sacrifice whatsoever.

he came back a couple of days later with a card that he had made out to his "Special Friend." we would chat and walk about town at lunch breaks and while i waited for the bus in the evenings thereafter. he got a lot of shit from the cops about it - an old black bum with a young white girl...but he did it anyway.

after about 3 - 4 months of friendship, he was awaiting me outside of my building, a proud smile on his face. he pulled me to the side, took something shiny off his neck, and placed it around mine. it was a gold filigree cross on a delicate chain.

he let me know that - for the last 3-4 months - he had been cleaning windows at the jewelry store for no pay just to be able to get something for me. this man - who had literally to work for his food each day - refused pay for that long just to give me something in exchange for a throwaway handout that meant absolutely nothing to me. and...he told me that he got that cross because he knew i was catholic, but noticed i didn't have a cross.

yes, there are plenty of shit ass bums...but i'll risk encountering one on the off chance that i'm talking to a joe comfort.
