Taken from the boxing thread, who was the guy who you think helped his team the best without having the most talent or compiling the greatest stats ?

I don't know why, but a guy like Phil Mckonkey for the Giants really jumps to mind for me.

Dennis Rodman, Robert Horry, the 3 guys i mentioned already - Bates, Tasker, and Thompson, and anyone who was ever a starter on an NFL offensive line

Ben Wallace did it well on Detroit too. . Another favorite of mine was Dave Meggitt when he was a Giant

Michael Curry was a great role player in the NBA. Also a young Mark Loretta when he played all over the field was a manager's best friend.

Every world series team this decade seems to have an ultra-scrappy guy that does really well come playoff time. They may not be the best player, but they rise to the occasion. Shane Victorino with the Phillies, David Eckstein with the Angels and Cardinals, the entire 2003 Marlins team, and Craig Counsell with the Diamondbacks all fit this description.

Speaking of great role players, I'll never fucking understand why the Cubs traded Mark DeRosa.

The difference is that I'm very happy that the Cubs made that move, while he cries himself to sleep about it each night.

Certainly not the greatest but I always thought Tony Clark was excellent as a role player
