What would be the proper etiquette if someone who shared your name and generally geographic location had a facebook page with an embarrassing/unprofessional picture as the profile shot?
A friend of mine is job-hunting, and it turns out there's someone who shares his name and is listed in "North Jersey". The profile picture is very similar to a typical "douchebags with hot chicks" pic, with visible booze. He's paranoid that HR people are running google searches, turning up the result, and immediately trashing the resume.
My first reaction was recommending sending the facebook person an email, but I realized that could lead to massive awkwardness.

Maybe send a link to his own Facebook page along with his resume to avoid the confusion

He doesn't have to worry about the facebook page. HR people are automatically thinking the worst when they see North Jersey on the resume.

use your middle initial in your display/ search name and use it in the same manner on the resume. Also your facebook page is searchable by e-mail, if he used the same as on his resume they won't pull up the wrong profile.

again use a middle name or initial on the resume to set yourself apart. I also never heard of a company wasting time on employee background checks and verifications before they were interviewed and considered for a job. It usually happens between the extension of the job offer and the signed employee documentation on both sides. At that point he could point out when offering references that said facebook site is not his.
Does he look like the impostor too?

His friend is probably upset because the guy in the picture has a different tribal arm band than he does.

You dont use your real name on facebook so that people with the same name as you arent embarrassed by the existence of your profile?

I'm really happy that my name is virtually un-googleable. My last name is a very common first name, plus my name is very close to that of a famous person. I have never found anything about myself on google.

When your friend runs into the facebook person on a plane and eventually they move in together and date the same crazy woman, then maybe he will realize it's really him in the other facebook profile with chicks and booze.

Follow Katja's advice. Create a profile with a somewhat professional picture (casual is ok, but neat and casual) with the middle initial. Set the privacy settings to lock out anyone who isn't a friend, so no one searching him will know that there's no real info in the page.

I doubt if you contacted the person with the facebook account and asked them to change it, that they would. its one of the stupid parts aspects of people who are all about themselves and they feel the need to use their actual name because they are hoping like crazy to connect with someone from highschool and keep reliving a long gone part of their miserable existance.

Yea exactly. The other guy is wrong for not changing his pictures and Facebook page to accomodate anyone else with the same name he has. Wow. Thats some logic.

I would agree, the only way to combat this is to be pro-active. Design a Facebook page, make it public, and post it to your resume. Maybe do the same with MySpace/Twitter/etc.?
I love this thread. I also have a very common name, so they think I am either an architect, attorney, or a fight choreographer.
