View Full Version : Tanning, Secret to Stretch Marks?

Is the secret to cure stretch marks revealed in the movie The Fifth Element.
Movie won't embed for some ungodly reason.

In the video, at 02:30 Lee Loo is hit with what I believe to be practically UV rays, so skin can generate. I've heard people call stretch marks, scar tissue? Do you think that maybe it is just off colored new skin tissue that has not been exposed to the sun like the rest of the skin in our body? How come those extreme bodybuilders do not show signs of stretch marks? They sure do tan a lot. Have you ever seen stretch marks on Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Sylvester Stallone? How about Carrot Top? Supposedly Bodybuilders get stretch marks from the rapid muscle growth that their body's undergo. I lift weights regularly, I'm not overweight, I'm pretty slim actually, and I have gotten a few already. I'm nowhere near the size of a professional bodybuilder. Those guys sure do surpass pregnant women (the common victim) in body growth, don't they? Do they know something that the population doesn't? You don't think TV execs airbrush all those Mr. Olympia contestants do you?
It really bugs me that no one has gotten to the bottom of this yet. All that's out there is a bunch of charlatans trying to con you with their shitty magical elixirs. None of which are scientifically proven. It seems like a simple problem. What do you think? I think creams, and lotions are a sham. Taking vitamins A & E as a way of prevention might work, but people don't ponder on these things until they've been struck by them.

Tanning in moderation can't possibly hurt.
Everything seems to be bad for you if you over do it.

the risk doesn't come close to being worth it for the potential theoretical benefit.
and..."can't possibly?" where's the science to back up "can't possibly?"

your theory is faulty as hell. Even gymnasts and weight lifters have stretchmarks. Not everybody gets them (like some women never get any when pregnant and others are covered) and it has to do with the elasticity of your skin as well as other factors.
And no, they don't airbrush them after the fact but often use spray tans and a lot of oil on their bodies for the shows to show off and define the muscles.

Maybe you're okay from a health perspective (maybe not), but I've always been of the understand that tanning will quicken the aging of your skin.

Ew, I was at the store today and walking through the check out line there was this girl in flip flops who had THE WORST tanned, brown, chocolate milk skin thing i have ever seen.
They looked like burnt Barbie doll feet, i don't know who let her leave the house with flip flops on.

I got my stretch marks in high school when I only weighed 105 and I'm only 5'3" (so yeah, no major growth spurt, muscle, or weight gain).
They're on my legs, fortunately, and not armpits or tummy which happened to a few of my friends who had a chubby phase. It just happens.

Everyone goes to the beach.
There are people who live in warm climates. They are exposed to a hot sun just about every day of the year. I don't see them dropping like flies from skin cancer.
It depends on your definition of moderation.

There's this new invention called sun block...
Skin cancer is on the rise, especially in women in their 20s. Hmmm, I wonder if that could be from tanning?

um, my mom's generation
used to sit out in the sun
all summer
even in aluminum foil tents
I have pictures to prove it!
there is no epidemic of skin cancer
with her generation
maybe the sunblock is the cause
as its use correlates more closely
with skin cancer among the 20-somethings
than the sun
dermatalogists just want to sell you stuff

the American Cancer Society is the wealthiest
"non-profit" in America
it has very close ties to pharmaceutical companies
mammography equipment companies and
other corporations that profit from cancer
you all should do some research
on Vitamin D and its role
in preventing all kinds of serious cancers
like colon and breast cancer
you get vitamin D from the sun
just do some of your own researching
and don't just accept the party line
always question authority

I have a dermatologist and he recommended that I tan to help with a mild case of psorriasis on my elbows.I asked him about the cancer risk and he said that in moderation the benefits out weigh the risks.Having lived in the near equatorial sun all of my life my advice would be to avoid burning. When I fish or golf I wear a hat with a brim.I always put sun screen on my kid yet by mid suwwer she is as brown as a bicuit.I refuse to be locked up inside for fear of the shiny thing in the sky.
As far as the stretch marks go,some get them some don't.Katja was right. The sun doesn't reduce them much to my wife's chagrin.

Like Dude said, we do need vitamin D so some exposure is beneficial but I'd say most people don't understand how to protect themselves. In fact, they go to great lengths to bake themselves with tanning oils or over tanning in beds and that's where the rise in cancer comes in to play.

it is women who use tanning salons
and sit out in the sun
if that were the correlation
then why are the rates for men
so much higher?

Men spend more time outside on a regular basis and don't use sunscreen or it's built up exposure. Manual labor jobs, mowing the lawn, 6 hour golf outings every weekend, etc.

from Family Doctor website:
Melanomas can be anywhere on your body. In men, they are most often on the chest, stomach or back.
in men, the chest, stomach, and back
generally get much LESS sun exposure
than the arms, neck and head.
why isn't melanoma most prevalent
on the part of men's bodies' that gets
the MOST sun exposure...the arms?
maybe it is a reverse correlation
maybe regular, moderate sun exposure
prevents melanoma

My grandfather battled skin cancer for years at the end of his life. He had been exposed to the sun constantly as he was on a ship in the Korean war and then worked on a barge until he retired. Every doctor (dermatologist or no) told him it was the sun constantly reflecting off the water. He had to go for procedures all the time, those greedy fatcat bastards.
As far as I know, he did not have stretch marks.

Wrong! They usually develop on skin that has been sun burnt over and over, given that their arms, neck and head are constant sun exposure it is less likely to burn, chest and stomach however are burning quickly and pretty badly when exposed to the sun.
There is nothing you can say that makes you seem right in your believes about skin cancers.
Nobody says that sun exposure isn't healthy but in moderation and when properly protected.
Dude!

yeah, i have no quarrel
that prolonged over-exposure
ie years in harsh sun
or severe sunburns as a child
will cause skin cancer
and horrible-looking wrinkly skin
especially on northern european type skin
my point is that moderate
regular exposure WITHOUT burning
your skin has Vitamin D benefits
that outweigh the risks by far
and the medical community is hiding that
most important, though
i am sure your grandfather was happy
not to have stretch marks!

that is exactly my point
regular moderate exposure
is good..it seems to actually PREVENT
melanoma
infrequent exposure, but to the point of burning
and sunburns in general
appear to be the culprit
