View Full Version : Why the Back to the Future sequels stink.

Consider this... in the original Back to the Future, the seemingly harmless act of Marty pushing his father out of the way of a moving car completely disrupts the timespace continuum and risks not just Martys life but all of existence...
So what do they do in BttF 2? They risk the entire timespace continuum in order to save Marty's son from commiting a lousy misdemeanor... a misdemeanor!! Does that make any sense at all? I mean... even if it triggered a whole chain of events that ruin the McFly family does that seem worth risking all of reality?

I agree. In the commentary track, Bob Gale (co-writer and co-producer) said they never intended to make a sequel and the line about Marty's kids was a throwaway to end the movie. When the movie did so well and the studio wanted to make a sequel, they were locked in into going to the future.
Part 1 was one of the all-time great movies; it was light and fun and it made sense. Part 2 was dark, dreary and complicated. Part 3 was a little better. Also, having Michael J. Fox playing so many roles (himself, his older self, his son, his daughter and his great grandfather) just got tedious.

Kind of corny how they added the To be continued... to the video release.

I was only four or five when I saw it in the theatre, so I'm not 100%, but I didn't think it was in the original theatrical release.

well then marty going back to the old west fucks things up as well
also ponder this emmitt goes to 1885 and marrys the teacher kid and has 2 kids that in the original timeline of things never existed cause they would have never of met and she shoulda died in the revine
how does that not fuck things up ??

The thing is this...
Marty's kid causing the misdemeanor was because the McFlys were fucked up again because of Marty's accident after he bettered the timeline in 1985.
Marty had to grow up and learn not to freak out everytime someone called him chicken.
And besides, we don't know how zero tolerance crime was in BTTF's 2015. Something that Marty's kid was a part of may have put him away for 10 years.

From Wikipedia. Take it for what it's worth.
According to Zemeckis and Gale, when the film was released on VHS, Universal added a "To be continued..." caption at the end to increase awareness of production on Back to the Future Part II and Part III. It was removed when the film was first released on DVD in 2002.

after all the trouble the Tannen family caused over the years, why didn't Marty and Doc kill Mad Dog Tannen and put an end to all the hurt before it could happen.
if I ever saw someone pushing my father around, be it past, present or future, I would lose my mind; and if I had the means to wipe that person from existence I would do it.
for God's sake, Marty saw Biff try to rape his mother!!!

Right. The first Jennifer quit acting because her mom got sick. Second Jennifer was Shue, and the plot didn't need her for the third movie until the end.

I always thought it was funny how they had all those great flying car designs that looked "futuristic" and then in the middle of the Hoverboard chase you see a fucking Jeep with basically a rocket shoved up its ass.

Don't forget, there are flying car conversions that are done in the future - that's what Doc did to the DeLorean. So maybe it's an "antique" Jeep that someone got converted.

Yeah, but the DeLorean at least looks reasonably futuristic with the time travel stuff and when it starts flying. The Jeep literally looks like a couple of rockets were glued to it and nothing else.

Doc did say that in the future the justice system is swift after they abolished all lawyers.
On a side note I was living in Miami when the Marlins won their first World Series. The classic rock station at the time would play the clip of McFly stuned that Miami would be in the World Series. 2015 could be the Cubs year.

At the end of II, how does the Doc go back in time? The lightening strike would provide the 1.21 gWatts, but the car wasn't going 88 mph. Did I miss something?

In the first one, 1950's Doc needed to connect the Delorian to the lightning bolt, and the only thing they knew was that it struck the clock tower at a certain time. That means they knew the minute that the lightning would strike, but not the second or millisecond.
In order for the lightning to charge the flux capacitor, Doc would have had to assure that the car was going 88 mph for at least a minute while the car was still in contact with a with its conductor wire that lead from the clock tower to the car. The only way a scientist could assure this would be to have a bare wire stretch from the clock tower and along a path that the car could travel for 60 seconds at 88 mph while the wire was connected to the flux capacitor. The distance that a car could travel in 60 seconds at 88 mph is over a mile. The wire from the clock tower would need to be longer than a mile and if you wanted to stretch a wire a mile, it would need poles set every hundred feet to keep the wire from slacking to the ground. The connector rod from the flux capacitor would need to be able to be touching the wire for the entire minute at 88 mph.

Maybe it had something to do with the Mr. Fusion conversion. I question I have is how did Biff, who is as dumb as a brick, figure out to use the time machine, go back in time to visit his younger self, and then re-program it to come back to exact time he left?
Part I was so perfect, why did they have to mess with it and go back to the same time in Part II? For example, in Part I, when George knock out Biff, it changes their whole future. But in Part II Biff just gets up and goes back after George. So that actually makes things worse for George.

no because you forget the part where Marty runs up to knocked out Biff and steals the almanac back and then knocks Biff out again when he comes to and says, "Youuuu?!?!", so Biff actually didn't get up to go back after George.
My issue with the movies is this, WHY employ a guy that tried to rape your future wife?!?!?!
